Chapter Twenty-Seven: A Triumphant Breakthrough!
Bang! Bang!
Two consecutive shots rang out, sparks flying. The central attack helicopter immediately turned into a ball of fire and plummeted to the earth.
"Ding!"
"Host acts with benevolence, merit is boundless!"
"Merit points +5!"
There were only three people aboard the helicopter. Perhaps because it had seen very little action and had little blood on its hands, the reward was not particularly high. Yu Fei had only received five merit points for each of the two helicopters destroyed so far, which hardly seemed commensurate with the difficulty of the challenge. This further confirmed that the merit system operated on its own unique criteria, at the very least not based purely on the level of danger.
"Get down!" Yu Fei shouted.
After he had downed one helicopter, the other two were not idle and had immediately fired back. Relying on an inexplicable sense of impending danger, Yu Fei sprinted to the left, ran for several meters, and then dove abruptly to the ground.
BOOM!
An explosion erupted. The spot where they had been standing was instantly swallowed by a sea of flames, and the vehicle they had just driven out in was blown to pieces.
James and the others, having received Yu Fei's warning and perhaps placing immense trust in him, had followed him to the left. In the end, aside from being buffeted by the shockwave, they remained unharmed.
Through his level three marksmanship, Yu Fei had gained much more than just shooting skills; those were merely a part of it, and perhaps not even the most valuable. He had also acquired the courage to stare down the barrel of a gun and a heightened sense of danger that allowed him to evade death amidst a hail of bullets. These gains were extraordinary—the kind that a normal person could never possess unless they had been through countless life-or-death trials on the battlefield.
Lying on the ground, Yu Fei felt the impact on his chest, leaving him breathless, but he had no time to recover. Having survived the explosion, he immediately braced his sniper rifle once more. In less than a second, he had locked onto the helicopter to his left.
Bang! Bang!
Two more shots roared. The bullets, like death warrants, crossed hundreds of meters in an instant and struck the helicopter.
With a thunderous crash, this helicopter followed in the wake of the first two, turning into a fireball and plummeting to the earth, leaving no trace behind.
"Ding!"
"Host acts with benevolence, merit is boundless!"
"Merit points +5!"
This sight sent a chill through the crew of the final helicopter, which had been adjusting its angle to fire another round at Yu Fei and his team.
The Umbrella Corporation had only deployed four attack helicopters to secure this area. Aside from one stationed toward the southern urban district, the other three were covering the east and west. There were no helicopters in the northern forest, as they would have been of little use there. Their primary mission was to guard the east and west approaches, both of which were connected to a large river; crossing it would allow one to escape Raccoon City entirely. Although this was difficult to achieve, the consequences of failure were high, which was why Umbrella had stationed three helicopters there.
As for the southern district, it was primarily held by five assault squads, with a single helicopter providing auxiliary support. It wasn't the fault of the Umbrella personnel; such an arrangement was actually quite logical. Before Yu Fei had made his move, who could have imagined that five assault squads could be wiped out so easily? With their heavy weaponry, those five squads could have easily dealt with a group of normal people like James’s team—they could have even taken down a group of Lickers.
The only variable was Yu Fei. Although his current strength was not necessarily overwhelming—likely falling short of a newly awakened Alice—he had the ability to "cheat" whenever he wanted. A simple throwing skill, combined with his 1.5 physique and those terrifying timed explosives—give him a single opening, and he could kill ten assault squads, let alone five. In this respect, even the awakened Alice might not be able to match him.
The same held true for his fight against the helicopters. The horror of an attack helicopter was proven by those rockets. Suspended in the air with an attack range of hundreds of meters, they were simply invincible to regular armed forces. Yet, this monster Yu Fei had used a single sniper rifle to take down three of them, two shots at a time.
The crew of the final helicopter, having witnessed everything, was already contemplating an escape. That very hesitation caused them to lose their final chance.
Bang! Bang!
After those two shots, the last helicopter followed the first three, turning into a ball of fire and crashing into the ground, bringing a flicker of light to the dark earth.
"Ding!"
"Host acts with benevolence, merit is boundless!"
"Merit points +5!"
Total merit points: 150!
"It's over." Yu Fei exhaled a long, heavy breath, trying to ease the tightness in his chest. This experience was easily the most perilous of his life; he had truly come within a hair's breadth of being killed. Fortunately, the outcome was good. All four helicopters had been shot down.
"By the way, James, the Umbrella Corporation won't send more helicopters to come after us, will they?" Yu Fei asked suddenly. Although he had taken down four, there had been a significant element of luck involved. If they sent four or five—or seven or eight—more, he didn't have the ability to take them all down.
"Huh?" James, who had been staring blankly at the distant flames, snapped back to reality upon hearing his name. After processing the question, he looked at Yu Fei with a strange expression.
"Although the Umbrella Corporation is powerful, they don't have many of these attack helicopters—at least not in Raccoon City. They likely have at most one or two left."
The power of an attack helicopter was undeniable, but precisely because of that, even the Umbrella Corporation couldn't have that many. Especially since Raccoon City was merely one of their branch offices. James even suspected that these four had been the entirety of their local fleet. Send seven or eight more? Did he think Umbrella was the United States military?
"That's good," Yu Fei said, finally relaxing completely. "I suppose we've successfully broken through the perimeter?"
"I suppose... so?" James glanced at the fire burning hundreds of meters away. They had killed everyone; that certainly counted as a successful breakout, right?
