Chapter 47: Heiress Shen Mengxia, Part 2
“Are you sure you haven’t made a mistake? Are you really looking for me, your biological younger sister?” Shen Mengxia asked, still finding it hard to believe.
“Of course I’m sure. Do you think the paternity test done by the police was fake?” Shen Mengqing held her sister’s hand tightly, her gaze resolute.
A mix of emotions swirled in Shen Mengxia’s heart — confusion over the sudden shift in her identity, and a flicker of joy she could hardly contain. But then she remembered the difficulties posed by Madam Fu and frowned. “Sister, even so, the Fu family…”
Shen Mengqing sneered coldly. “Hmph, the Fu family is nothing. Now that they know your true identity, their petty tricks are beneath notice. Our Shen family has vast assets overseas and countless connections.”
“But, sister, I have to report to the closed research team now. I need to reconsider my feelings for Ye Huaiting. I… I’m a bit lost right now,” Shen Mengxia confessed earnestly.
Shen Mengqing gently stroked her head with affection. “Silly little sister, I understand how you feel. But you don’t have to struggle too much. The reason I didn’t tell you sooner is because things within the family are a bit chaotic right now. For now, just focus on your research.”
Shen Mengxia nodded, feeling a newfound confidence welling up inside her.
The two sisters talked for a long while, exchanging reminders before finally parting ways.
Watching her sister’s retreating figure, Shen Mengxia silently vowed that no matter what the future held, she would live a life full of her own brilliance.
Shen Mengqing couldn’t reveal too much about the family’s internal affairs—even she was overwhelmed and had fled to Country Z. Although she said she was searching for her sister, she was truly escaping the family’s power struggles.
After seeing her sister off and returning to her dormitory, Shen Mengxia immediately contacted her professor to arrange a leave of absence.
She was already several days late; time was pressing, and she had little left to spare.
Though Shen Mengqing’s words had revealed that she was a wealthy heiress, coming from a family even grander than the Fus, it still felt unreal to her. Growing up with her grandfather had taught her that only by holding money and skills firmly in her own hands could she feel truly secure.
She didn’t want to rely on anyone. After seven years with the Fu family, Madam Fu’s single sentence severed all ties, and those years ultimately earned her nothing but a single card.
Now that she had reunited with her sister, no matter how much Shen Mengqing boasted about the Shen family’s wealth or her noble status, in the end it was the same — Shen Mengqing handed her a card before leaving.
Upon hearing that this was the critically important and highly publicized national research project she had been involved with, the professor’s eyes lit up immediately. He treated the leave application with utmost seriousness and efficiency.
After a series of tense yet orderly procedures, to everyone’s astonishment, all the necessary paperwork was completed in just one morning! The speed was nothing short of remarkable.
That afternoon, Shen Mengxia went shopping alone, deciding to buy essentials and some changes of clothes.
After all, her absence might be prolonged this time, and since she had resolved to join such an important research project, the lavish clothes she had brought from the Fu family were clearly unsuitable for this new environment.
Meanwhile, in the opulent Fu family mansion, Fu Yancheng sat in the spacious, bright study. His face was stern as he listened intently to a bodyguard’s detailed report on Shen Mengxia’s latest movements.
Upon learning that she had successfully arranged her leave and was preparing daily necessities, Fu Yancheng’s brow furrowed deeply, as if a heavy weight pressed down on his heart.
After a moment, unable to suppress his anxiety and worry any longer, Fu Yancheng swiftly grabbed his phone from the side and deftly dialed Shen Mengxia’s number.
But all he received was a series of rapid busy signals. Seconds stretched into minutes with no answer.
Finally, a cold automated voice came through: “The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”
