Lu Zetao pressed his lips lightly.
“I heard from Qing Lei that you paid for his daughter Tian Niu’s medical expenses today?”
Lu Zetao’s expression was quite complicated. If Huang Qinglei hadn’t told him personally and Wang Hui and others hadn’t vouched for it, he wouldn’t have believed that Su Wanyue could be so kind-hearted.
How did this woman suddenly change her nature so drastically?
“That’s right! Xiao Hui was already at the doorstep; if I could help, of course I would,” Su Wanyue answered confidently.
“Thirty yuan is no small amount…”
Lu Zetao was interrupted before he could finish.
“That’s money I earned with my own hard work; it’s clean money.”
“Then… do you still have enough on hand? At least enough for food?”
Hearing this, Su Wanyue’s guard loosened a bit.
So this guy was cold on the outside but warm inside. He looked indifferent but was actually soft-hearted.
Maybe that was what the original owner liked about him.
“I have money; I can support myself,” Su Wanyue added, “No need for you to worry.”
“How do you support yourself?” Lu Zetao pressed.
Why was he talking so much today?
Had he noticed she was different from the original owner and was deliberately testing her?
“I sell glutinous rice balls near the school.”
Su Wanyue didn’t plan to say more and was about to leave when she suddenly heard a “bang” as Lu Zetao fell onto the muddy ground, his crutch flying out of his hand.
Su Wanyue shuddered in fright, eyes wide with worry.
“Are you okay?” she hurried over and crouched down to help him up.
It looked painful just to watch.
“Doctor Lu, your foot is injured; you have to be careful walking!” Su Wanyue frowned deeply.
It was late, and the street was deserted. Anxious, she quickly supported him.
This guy was tall and strong, about 1.8 meters, thin but sturdy.
Su Wanyue struggled to lift him. Lu Zetao’s face was pale, sweat beading on his forehead, his body trembling slightly.
“What’s wrong? What’s the matter? Are you in pain?” Su Wanyue asked anxiously.
He had sprained his ankle earlier but had forced himself to stand through a six-hour surgery, worsening the injury.
Seeing him silent, Su Wanyue rolled up the left pant leg.
His ankle was badly swollen and bruised, looking quite alarming.
“Did you bring any medicinal wine?”

Frowning, Su Wanyue gently touched the injured area and asked again.
Lu Zetao didn’t answer, his body trembling continuously.
After a long while, he waved his hand weakly and said, “It’s nothing.”
“After all this, you still say it’s nothing?!” Su Wanyue was deeply worried, her gaze firm. She didn’t care about anything else, grabbed his backpack, and pulled out a bottle of medicinal wine, helping him sit under a nearby tree.
“Bear with it, I’ll rub some medicine on you.”
She poured some wine into her palm, warmed it, and gently massaged his ankle.
The warmth made Lu Zetao instinctively pull his leg back.
Su Wanyue thought to herself that she wasn’t one to meddle, but these troubles kept finding her.
She couldn’t just turn a blind eye, so she grabbed his calf firmly and said firmly, “Don’t move! You’re already in your twenties; how can you be so reckless? Do you want to become crippled?!”
Lu Zetao wanted to argue but the pain left him no energy.
He opened his mouth but said nothing, letting Su Wanyue apply the medicine and massage.
Though not medically trained, Su Wanyue’s treatment was quite effective.
Lu Zetao’s pain soon eased considerably.
“Enough,” he said, stopping her from continuing, picked up the medicine bottle from the ground, put it back in the bag, and dryly said, “Thanks.”
“It’s no big deal,” Su Wanyue stood up and dusted herself off.
“Hey…” Lu Zetao licked his dry lips, hesitating to speak.
“Speak up, don’t stall!”
Su Wanyue thought, why was he so slow? A grown man acting so dithering.
Her temper had definitely grown sharper.
Lu Zetao sighed, stared at the ground, and said, “Grandpa misses you. Can you come back to visit during the Dragon Boat Festival? …If not, it’s okay.”
Lu Zetao’s grandfather was the only one in the Lu family who liked Su Wanyue and supported their marriage.
Though the original owner used to cause trouble, she respected the old man deeply, perhaps because he resembled her own late grandfather.
Thinking of this touched the softest part of Su Wanyue’s heart.
Her own grandfather had loved her dearly but had passed away too soon…
“Sure, I’ll visit him then,” Su Wanyue smiled, “You should prepare all the necessary documents too, so the divorce can be processed smoothly.”
Upon hearing this, Lu Zetao’s eyes showed a complicated emotion.
After a moment, he replied, “Okay. We’ll go together then.”
Together?
Before Su Wanyue could respond, Lu Zetao hurried away on his crutch.
She rolled her eyes. Hmph! That man!

“Yun Fei, are you asleep yet?” Chen Ruyun tossed and turned in bed, brows furrowed, her face full of worries.
Li Yunfei was exhausted from a day’s work, looking like a tired old man, frowning, “It’s the middle of the night. Why aren’t you sleeping?”
Chen Ruyun wanted to sleep too!
But…
“What’s going on with Su Wanyue? She seems like a different person. Last time, she confronted me stubbornly, forcing me to apologize and lose face. Today, she’s so reasonable and even paid the medical fees.” Chen Ruyun crossed her arms, eyes flickering with doubt.
Hearing this, Li Yunfei said, “That really doesn’t sound like her. I’m puzzled too.”
“Turn over!” Chen Ruyun nudged Li Yunfei and continued, “The more I think about it, the more suspicious it is. She didn’t hold a grudge against me for scolding her foolish little brother, nor for what I said to her. And she even paid for the medicine—what’s she thinking?”
“In the end, she’s just barely an adult, not even twenty yet. She’s still a child,” Li Yunfei sighed.
“Alright, don’t overthink it. When the salary comes at the end of the month, we’ll pool some money and pay her back.”
“Our salary is barely enough to get by. If we give it all to her, what will you and the kid eat?” Chen Ruyun grumbled.
Li Yunfei frowned.
“But we can’t owe her either.”
That made sense.
“Okay, fine. I’ll listen to you.” Chen Ruyun tugged the blanket and fell silent.
In the following days, Su Wanyue rose early and worked late selling glutinous rice balls.
Though she expected sales to decline, she had little capital and couldn’t change her business, so she decided to sell off the remaining ingredients first.
If she couldn’t sell them, she would take them home and share with the neighbors.
They say one is indebted when accepting help.
Everyone who had eaten her rice balls recently treated her differently.
They said she had become more sensible.
Before long, the Dragon Boat Festival was approaching.
Su Wanyue counted the money she had earned over the past few days—about eighty yuan in total.
She planned to buy some gifts for Grandpa Lu, and also for Lu Zetao’s father, brother, sister, and mother.
It was a rare chance to return to her old village; she certainly wouldn’t go empty-handed.
She bought canned goods, meat, and some popular skincare products.
