Volume 1, Chapter 5: What Mischief Is Brewing Now

Did you get your head caught in the door? Or were you kicked by a donkey? Su Wanyue curled her lips disdainfully. “Because he doesn’t deserve the title of a ‘five-good husband’ at all!”
“What? Five-good husband?”
“That’s right!” Su Wanyue brushed off the dust on her clothes, stood up, and spoke clearly and systematically. “A five-good husband means: first, he won’t fool around with other women; second, he won’t lose his temper at his own wife; third, he won’t be a neglectful household manager; fourth, he understands and appreciates his wife’s hardships; and fifth, he can earn money to support the family.”
“But your so-called perfect Mr. Lu—Dr. Lu, first, he never had me in his heart; all he ever cared about was Jin Sitian; second, he gets angry at me at the slightest provocation; third, after marriage, he ignores all the household matters; fourth, he never understands my struggles; and fifth, I’ve never seen him bring much money home. Tell me, can a husband like that be called a five-good husband?”
Lu Zetao’s face darkened like the bottom of a pot at that moment.
“Su Wanyue! Stop making a scene here and leave!” Lu Zetao impatiently ordered.
“Who gave you the right to order me around?” Su Wanyue completely ignored him. “Or do you think I’m squatting on your family’s land? Ugh! What a scumbag!”
After being belittled and insulted repeatedly by Su Wanyue, even Lu Zetao, who had a good temper, couldn’t help but flare up in anger.
“You’re the real weirdo!”
Stealing money from home, running off with another man while holding the only keepsake left by his grandfather!
She, Su Wanyue, was the absolute oddball!
“Haha! Everyone listen up! This is what your so-called perfect Dr. Lu said to me. He even cursed.”
Su Wanyue’s almond-shaped eyes curved into crescent moons as she smiled, her beauty stirring hearts.
The men around, watching the scene unfold, were all stunned, thinking only one thing: Dr. Lu’s new wife was truly beautiful.
Realizing his loss of composure before the crowd, Lu Zetao’s expression grew even uglier.
“Su Wanyue, stop making trouble!” Lu Zetao was genuinely annoyed. This woman must be his natural nemesis! Whenever she appeared, his life was miserable.
Hearing this, a cold smile curled at the corner of Su Wanyue’s lips. “I’m making trouble? The evidence is right here. Did I say anything wrong?”
She shrugged and looked at the onlookers, then said, “You and your mother, Zhao Guihua, both think Jin Sitian is the best choice—not only is she beautiful, she’s also the only college graduate in the village, and more importantly, she’s the village chief’s daughter. At least a woman like that would be worthy of you, Lu Zetao.”
“If you don’t like me, fine, but to falsely accuse me of running away with someone else—what kind of despicable tactic is that? Divorce, then divorce! Why resort to underhanded tricks?”

Usually, Lu Zetao was serious and strict about work. Yet now, this lofty man was being so thoroughly humiliated by Su Wanyue.
He wanted nothing more than to punch this woman to make her stop spouting nonsense.
To make Su Wanyue shut up and leave, Lu Zetao deliberately provoked her.
“Yes, Jin Sitian is a thousand times better than you! You’re making a fuss because you can’t compare to her. Stop embarrassing yourself here. I advise you to give up on me and leave quickly!”
“Bah!” Su Wanyue spat fiercely. “I was blind before, but now I know better and have changed. You better put away your narcissism! You go your own bright path, and I’ll cross my own narrow bridge!”
“Fine! Let’s not waste words. Let’s go to the civil affairs bureau now and get this marriage annulled!” Lu Zetao frowned deeply.
“Sure! I’ve wanted to do that for a long time. I’ve almost sold all my stuff too. Let’s go!” Su Wanyue glared fiercely at him and briskly packed her belongings into a basket on her back.
Afraid Su Wanyue would change her mind, Lu Zetao didn’t even take off his white coat. He grabbed her and headed straight for home on a tractor.
They fetched their household registration book and marriage certificate, then rushed toward the civil affairs bureau.
As luck would have it, the bureau was closed.
The two had no choice but to return home separately.
In her past life, the original owner had lived so miserably. This time, Su Wanyue vowed to live with dignity!
Lu Zetao got off the tractor, expecting her to cling to him and follow him home, but seeing her resolutely walk away, he was stunned.
This woman had used all sorts of despicable and shameless means just to marry him—crying, causing trouble, even threatening to hang herself.
After marriage, she wasn’t obedient; she stole from the family, ran off with another man, disgraced him, and refused to divorce.
The last divorce paper was just a play she orchestrated herself.
Why was she so straightforward today? What scheme was she hiding this time?
If the civil affairs bureau hadn’t suddenly closed, they would have finalized the divorce.
After all the turmoil, by the time Su Wanyue returned to Caixia Village, the sun had already set.
“Mom!”
From afar, Su Wanyue saw her stepmother standing by the river at the village entrance waiting for her.
“Wanyue, you finally came back. Was business bad today? Why did you stay in the county town so long? You worried me sick!”

Seeing Su Wanyue’s figure, Liu Zilan anxiously ran up to greet her.
“Mom, I was late because I went to the civil affairs bureau with Lu Zetao,” Su Wanyue said truthfully, warmed by her stepmother’s concerned face.
“Did you really get the divorce certificate?” Liu Zilan asked, surprised.
“The bureau was closed,” Su Wanyue replied.
Liu Zilan smiled kindly, hiding her worries. “It’s okay. Let’s go home first. I made your favorite shredded potatoes.”
That night, Liu Zilan didn’t ask much. She knew her daughter was grown and capable of making her own decisions. She respected her choice.
At this moment, Su Wanyue only had one thing on her mind—to earn money. Nothing else mattered.
She hadn’t expected wild chestnuts to sell so well. In just two days, she made a good profit, with some left after helping out at home.
However, a few jealous women saw how profitable selling wild chestnuts was and started picking chestnuts themselves to boil and sell.
With competition, Su Wanyue’s business suffered. Moreover, boiled chestnuts lost their texture after two hours and sometimes even spoiled.
By the third day of selling, Su Wanyue returned empty-handed.
This couldn’t go on.
So on the fourth day, she stayed home to think of a solution instead of selling wild chestnuts.
How else could chestnuts be eaten? Sugar-roasted? Too time-consuming and labor-intensive.
Wait!
They could be roasted. In the countryside, roasting was the easiest.
Su Wanyue quickly scored a few chestnuts with a knife and threw them into the fire. She roasted them on high heat first, then moved them to the edge of the fire to slow-roast until cooked through.
Her simple-minded little brother caught the aroma and gathered around. Su Wanyue served him a small bowl; the smell made his mouth water.
After packing up, Su Wanyue carried two large baskets and headed back to the county town.
