Chapter 38: Your Worldview Is Quite Peculiar

My old sunglasses had already broken, so Sister Yan bought me a more expensive pair of photochromic lenses that worked both day and night. They were very comfortable to wear.
When I returned to the company, I saw a beautiful woman standing behind the reception desk as soon as I walked through the door. She was wearing a white blouse and a dark-blue skirt suit. She bowed to me and said, “Good morning, Boss!”
I studied her carefully, puzzled. “Xiangxiang, what are you doing?”
“Working, of course!” Xiangxiang replied as though it were obvious. “I’m now the receptionist at our Yan Hui Company!
“I picked out this uniform myself. Second-in-Command, what do you think?”
She stepped out from behind the desk and spun around in front of me.
“Looks great!” I nodded and said sincerely, “With a figure like yours, you’d look good in anything!”
Xiangxiang smiled even more brightly and gave me a thumbs-up. “Boss really does have an eye for beauty. You’re much better than certain people! That lecher has nothing but filthy thoughts in his head!”
“Oh, come on!” Chen Yinan walked over and said to me with a perfectly serious expression, “Second-in-Command, be honest. With her figure and those long legs, wouldn’t she look even better in a qipao?”
Xiangxiang rolled her eyes at him. “Give it a rest. The qipao you’re talking about has a slit all the way up to the armpit! You might as well have me stand here wearing a curtain!”
Chen Yinan shook his head. “That’s precisely the point—the beauty of openness! The most attractive things are the ones that are half-hidden!
“I’m sure our company would be packed with customers and doing excellent business by then!
“As the saying goes, honest advice is unpleasant to hear, and good medicine tastes bitter. Everything I’ve suggested is for the company’s future!”
“Get lost!” Xiangxiang and I kicked him at the same time. “This is a legitimate company, not a brothel!”
The words suddenly sounded rather inappropriate, and I glanced at Xiangxiang apologetically.
There was no change whatsoever in her expression, however, which allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief.
I clapped my hands and called out to everyone, “Come over here for a moment!”
Once Sister Yan and Youyou had also come out of their respective offices, I returned all their bank cards to them.
“Thank you all for your wholehearted support. These are your cards, and not a single cent has been touched. Please take them back. In fact, Third Master left money for Brother Black and Little Monkey. They have more than enough.”
Xiangxiang smiled. “There’s no need to rush. If the company needs to buy anything, we can use this money. I don’t need it at the moment, anyway!”
“Really, it won’t be necessary!” I pressed my palms together. “The company has no plans to purchase anything expensive right now, and even if we did, we have enough money.
“Everyone, please take your cards back. Old Chen, you should also return the money to those friends and thank them on my behalf.
“Brother Black is in the hospital now, while Brother Liang and Little Monkey have stayed behind to look after him.

“I’ve already arranged meals for them through the hospital cafeteria, so there’s no need to worry.
“As for the company, I’ll be counting on all of you. I may have to go back and forth between two places for a while, and I also have some personal matters to deal with. I probably won’t be able to help much for the time being.”
Everyone thumped their chests and declared their confidence. Only then did I feel reassured. I called Sister Yan and went to her office.
After closing the door, I took out the several cards Little Monkey had given me and placed them in front of Sister Yan. I also told her what Little Monkey had said at the time.
Sister Yan stared at the cards, her eyes widening. There was a full eight million in them!
After a while, she looked at me and said, “Stone, I think we should leave this money here for now. Once everyone is together, we can discuss how to use it. What do you think?”
“Sis, I’ll do as you say.” I nodded.
Sister Yan picked up the cards, seemingly intending to put them in a drawer. After thinking it over, she slipped them into a pocket close to her body instead. Then she asked me, “You said you had some personal matters to deal with. What are they?”
I asked her, “Sis, do you remember what the person who gave you that envelope looked like? Did you ever see him again?”
Sister Yan frowned in thought, then shook her head. “He seemed to be deliberately hiding his face, so I didn’t get a good look at him. I never saw him again afterward, either. Stone, why are you looking for him?”
I drew a breath. “Sis, I think he might be Deng the Lame! Don’t forget—the thing he learned most thoroughly from Third Master was disguise!”
Sister Yan’s expression changed. As though she had suddenly realized something, she said, “Then the person who sent us the first warning must have been him too!”
I nodded and lowered my voice. “Sis, I suspect he’s somewhere nearby, watching us the whole time!
“And he’s in great danger now. Zhao Xiangbo is looking for him too!
“I have to help him, but first I need to find him!”
Sister Yan nodded thoughtfully. Just then, the telephone on the desk rang. She pressed the speaker button, and Xiangxiang’s voice came through.
“Sister Yan, there’s a girl here asking for the Second Boss.”
Sister Yan glanced at me, then replied with a hum, “He’s gone out.”
A girl had come to see me? Who could it be? Sister Yan looked just as puzzled as I felt, and she followed me outside.
When we reached the entrance, I frowned at the girl standing at the foot of the steps. I recognized her at once.
Luo Meiqi.
Brother Black’s ex-girlfriend.
I stared at her sternly. “What are you doing here?”
Luo Meiqi glanced at me timidly, seeming to want to say something but not knowing how to begin.
I had no favorable impression of this woman whatsoever. Frowning, I said, “If you have nothing important to say, please leave. I’m busy and don’t have time to waste.”

Just as I turned to go inside, Luo Meiqi called out behind me, “Mr. Shi, please wait!”
I stopped and said impatiently, “If you have something to say, then say it. Don’t stand there hemming and hawing. I really don’t have time to play guessing games with you!”
Luo Meiqi took a bank card from her pocket and held it out to me.
“One of the students at the gym is a nurse at that hospital. She told us about Strong Brother’s condition, and I heard that you were raising money for him.
“There’s one hundred thousand in this card. I originally planned to use it for my wedding with Strong Brother, but now… there’s no need for that anymore. Please use it to pay his medical expenses. All right?”
I turned around and narrowed my eyes at her, but I did not take the card.
Luo Meiqi stepped forward and tried to press it into my hand. I raised my hand and avoided it.
“Take your filthy money back. Brother Black won’t use it. Thank you for your concern. I don’t know whether you came here today because you genuinely want to help him or because you wanted to make a spectacle of his misery, but I believe Brother Black doesn’t want to see you anymore!”
Luo Meiqi’s face went pale, though her eyes reddened. She lowered her head and said, “I know I wronged him, and I know I have no right to stand here.
“But I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to see him. Then those two men threw me out!
“I had no choice but to come here and beg you for help. I really didn’t come to laugh at him. I still love him…”
“Stop!” I waved my hand. “Listening to you say these things only makes me sick! It makes me sick on Brother Black’s behalf!
“When you were lying beneath that lecherous old man, why weren’t you thinking of Brother Black then?
“When you sold yourself and betrayed Brother Black for a little profit, why didn’t you say that you loved him?”
Luo Meiqi raised her tear-filled face and looked at me. “Even then, I was thinking of him. I loved him even then!”
I was so furious that I actually laughed.
How could she possibly have the nerve to say something like that? Was this woman completely insane?
Yet Luo Meiqi continued to weep as she spoke. “I never lied to him. I truly wanted to marry him!
“I know what I did with my boss was wrong, and I know I let Strong Brother down. But my mother was lying in the hospital. Without the money for her medicine, she would have died!
“My body was the only thing I had that could be considered capital. If it could save my mother’s life, what was there to hesitate about?
“As long as my heart still belonged to Strong Brother, we could still be together!”
“Shut up!” I could not bear to listen any longer. I ripped off my glasses and glared at her. “How can a woman have such a twisted sense of right and wrong? You… What is wrong with you?”
