After wasting an entire afternoon and losing a complete outfit in the process, Gu Lingyi crouched miserably on the curb, on the verge of tears.

The words “Calling a vehicle” had been circling endlessly on her phone screen.

The fire had only just been put out, and everyone at the studio was busy dealing with the aftermath. No one had the time to spare for her.

As luck would have it, her van had already driven off with Ruonan inside, and in this godforsaken corner of nowhere, finding a car was nearly impossible.

Gu Lingyi watched helplessly as her phone’s battery dropped from two percent to one, then finally went completely black.

What a disastrous day!

Nothing had gone right!

Fuming, Gu Lingyi stuffed her phone back into her bag.

She was still wearing the tattered green dress. A few smudges of soot stained her bare back, while her disheveled hair spilled across her chest. She looked utterly wretched and bedraggled.

At that moment, footsteps approached from a distance. A pair of expensive men’s leather shoes appeared before her, leading up to a pair of impeccably pressed tailored trousers.

Gu Lingyi lowered her eyes listlessly. She could not even be bothered to look up.

“What were you playing with?”

The man’s deep, magnetic voice came from above her head. It sounded familiar, though she could not place it.

Gu Lingyi was in no mood to respond. Then she heard the faintly amused addition:

“You played with it until it was all torn up.”

Torn up!?

Gu Lingyi’s head snapped up. A trace of embarrassment and irritation crept into her normally cool, indifferent eyes. She glared furiously, ready to snap back—only to catch sight of that streak of white hair above her.

Oh. It was her cat in human form.

Her anger instantly fizzled out.

Because he reminded her of her pet, Gu Lingyi always felt an inexplicable sense of closeness toward him.

She simply could not bring herself to be fierce with him.

Fine. She would forgive him!

Gu Lingyi turned her head away and continued ignoring him.

Fu Linyuan found her sulky little face and puffed-out cheeks unbearably adorable.

He bent down and, unable to resist, reached out to tease her. His warm fingertips gently pinched her cheeks, then lifted her chin.

“You drank my liquor and still planned to turn around and pretend you didn’t know me?”

Gu Lingyi raised her eyes to meet the man’s dark, fathomless gaze and pursed her lips reluctantly.

“I played with fire.”

It was, in a way, an answer to his question.

“Mm.”

Fu Linyuan nodded. Then he straightened and took a step back.

“Get up. I’ll take you home.”

Gu Lingyi’s eyes lit up, but they dimmed again almost at once. She lowered her head and glanced twice at her bare feet, then buried her face in her arms in frustration.

“No! I’ll dirty your car, and I can’t afford to compensate you!”

Fu Linyuan looked at the stubborn back of her head with amusement and patiently replied, “You don’t need to compensate me. Get up.”

“No!”

Gu Lingyi had only meant to put on a show of modest reluctance. If he said one more word, she would definitely agree.

She had not expected Fu Linyuan to simply reach beneath her arms and lift her off the ground as though she were a child.

“What are you doing?”

Gu Lingyi struggled twice without success, her eyes widening in disbelief.

What kind of joke was this?

She was someone who could rip a zombie’s skull open with her bare hands. Who exactly was this man to overpower her so easily?

Yes, he was tall and powerfully built, but surely he could not possess such inhuman strength!?

“Put me down!”

Gu Lingyi kicked hard. Her filthy feet left several black marks on Fu Linyuan’s trouser leg.

“Stop making a fuss!”

Fu Linyuan hoisted her over his shoulder and strode toward the black-and-silver Phantom parked at the intersection.

His assistant, Lu Qian, was quick to read the situation and opened the door for them. He came face-to-face with Gu Lingyi, who was sprawled across Fu Linyuan’s back and doing her best to crane her little face upward.

“Miss Gu.”

Lu Qian pushed up his glasses and greeted her respectfully.

The corner of Gu Lingyi’s mouth twitched. She smiled at the man she had only met a few hours earlier and waved as gracefully as she could.

“Hi! We meet again!”

The next second, a tingling sensation shot through the roots of her thighs. Fu Linyuan had given her a smack.

“Mm—what are you doing!”

Gu Lingyi’s eyes widened. Gritting her teeth, she snarled, “You mangy mutt!”

Her cheeks flushed, though it was impossible to tell whether from embarrassment or anger.

“This is sexual harassment! I’m going to sue you!”

“Don’t worry…”

Fu Linyuan calmly placed her in the back seat, amusement glimmering in his eyes.

“It’ll be legal soon enough.”

“Huh?”

Gu Lingyi froze and blinked at him suspiciously with her almond-shaped eyes.

She watched as the man naturally moved her lower legs off the seat before sitting down himself in the spot she had thoroughly dirtied.

A realization dawned on Gu Lingyi.

Could this man be the brutal tycoon she was supposed to marry in the original novel?

Combined with everything she had seen and heard at the club early that morning, it was highly likely.

Gu Lingyi folded her arms and turned her head, leisurely looking Fu Linyuan up and down.

Then a large hand gently covered her eyes.

“What are you doing!”

Gu Lingyi protested, displeased.

“We’re going to be legal soon, and you still won’t let me look?”

Fu Linyuan did not answer. His Adam’s apple bobbed.

Her gaze was far too direct. It made it difficult for him to suppress his instincts—to pin her down.

The car started moving, and the partition slowly rose. An eerie silence settled over the back seat.

After a long while, Fu Linyuan could clearly feel her long lashes trembling against his palm.

Her vision had been blocked for too long, and Gu Lingyi was beginning to lose patience.

“Hey!”

Only after a moment of silence did the man finally speak, his voice low, husky, and rich.

“Linyuan.”

“?”

“Fu Linyuan.”

Fu Linyuan lowered his hand and met Gu Lingyi’s clear, bewildered gaze.

“My name.”

“Oh…”

Gu Lingyi suddenly understood. She cleared her throat and imitated his tone.

“Lingyi.”

“Gu Lingyi.”

“Mm.”

Fu Linyuan let out a low chuckle.

“I know.”

Gu Lingyi lazily leaned back in her seat, recalling the description of Fu Linyuan in the original novel, as well as Qin Yue and Huo Qi’s conversation.

Every detail pointed toward labels such as brutal, ruthless, and sadistic.

Gu Lingyi shot a sidelong glance at the man beside her, who was operating a tablet.

People really could not be judged by appearances.

He looked refined and elegant, strikingly handsome, like a perfectly sculpted model brought to life. Who would have thought that beneath the surface, he was a complete psychopath?

“Your reputation is terrible!”

Gu Lingyi shook her head disdainfully.

“I’m not willing.”

Whatever the Gu family intended was their business. As long as she refused to cooperate, no one could force her.

Fu Linyuan did not even raise his head. His fingers tapped lightly on the tablet, and there was a faint, almost imperceptible tenderness in his voice.

“I’ll buy you a big house.”

“?”

Gu Lingyi snorted.

“Who wants that?”

Fu Linyuan said, “A waterbed. Three meters wide.”

Gu Lingyi fell silent.

Aside from the luxurious residence that occupied an entire base, the waterbed was her favorite possession in the apocalypse.

By sheer coincidence, it was three meters wide as well. Every time she finished hacking through several waves of zombies, she would jump around on it wildly with her cat.

Before Gu Lingyi could respond, Fu Linyuan pressed on.

“A yacht, named after you.”

Number One? Not bad.

Gu Lingyi turned toward the window, trying to hide the smile threatening to break across her lips.

Fu Linyuan continued, “A private jet for your travels.”

Through the reflection in the window, Gu Lingyi watched Fu Linyuan’s calm, effortless expression and narrowed her eyes.

Tsk. This man was truly devious. He knew exactly where to stab.

Fu Linyuan did not seem finished.

“Where would you like to buy an island? You can go there on vacation whenever you want.”

“Hmm…”

Gu Lingyi glanced at the man beside her and actually began to consider it seriously.

“The South Pacific, perhaps. The climate is pleasant.”
