Yan Ye stood beside a pillar not far away, arms folded and eyes closed as she rested.

After seeing the fans onto their bus, Tang Xu returned and felt a pang of concern at the sight of her weary figure.

Carrying the brocade box containing the microphone, he walked toward her, hesitating over whether he should wake her.

He had been standing there for some time when the cool night breeze drifted past. Perhaps it was only his imagination, but as Tang Xu gazed at Yan Ye’s exquisite, beautiful face, the tips of his ears began to burn.

Her beauty should have been unforgettable. She was clearly the sort of person who left others dazzled, and yet there was something indistinct and faintly strange about her.

He had felt that way ever since the first day they met.

“Have you looked long enough?”

Caught staring, Tang Xu’s eyes darted everywhere. Yan Ye patted her arms and rubbed her shoulders, then glanced at him. Not only his ears but his face had turned red.

“Do you think I’m beautiful?”

Tang Xu nodded vigorously. She was beautiful. It was just that there was an indescribable sense of having forgotten something.

“Is it possible that everyone who meets you eventually forgets you?”

Yan Ye’s footsteps halted. She seemed about to say something, but in the end, she walked away without looking back.

At the mouth of the alley, Golden Ingot stood waiting eagerly. At last, the two of them returned home.

Yan Ye had forbidden it from going to the cemetery, saying it would only get in the way.

Please. It was a robot—and not just any robot, but a highly intelligent one. To put it plainly, Yan Ye was simply lazy and did not want it tagging along. She was afraid it would steal her spotlight.

Hmph. Yan Ye really was a wicked woman.

But that wicked woman had brought it a recorded video and some fragrant, savory flatbread.

“My dear Ms. Yan, it’s been another whole day without seeing you. I missed you terribly!”

One look at Golden Ingot’s chattering little mouth, and it was obvious that it had spent no small amount of time gossiping about her. Yan Ye tossed both her own belongings and Tang Xu’s over to Golden Ingot, seized Tang Xu by the sleeve, and dragged him outside.

Before leaving, she did not forget to ask Golden Ingot to call in sick from her livestream.

Golden Ingot stamped its feet angrily behind them, but it could not catch up with the speed at which they disappeared.

“Yan Ye, if you lose any more followers, you won’t have a single one left to lose!”

Tang Xu was intensely curious. He had never expected Yan Ye, who appeared so aloof, to host livestreams in private. Did anyone really watch them?

Fine. With a face like hers, who could bear to click away?

“Boss Yan must have a lot of viewers when she livestreams, right?”

In reality, she had barely any.

“What do you sell online?” Surely they were not all people like him.

Seeing straight through his thoughts, Yan Ye exposed him without mercy.

“I do legitimate livestreaming.”

“I never said your livestreaming was illegitimate! I’m just curious. Do many people watch? Do you have many followers? Are there many big spenders on your leaderboard?” With a face like hers, it would be difficult not to become famous. “By the way, if you want to make more money, you could enter the entertainment industry. With your looks, plenty of people would be willing to promote you.”

Yan Ye countered,

“Do you think I earn less now than people in the entertainment industry?”

“Who would complain about having too much money? Other people can make millions from a single advertisement. At worst, once you become famous, you can sell things through livestreams. More people will buy from you.”

The two of them arrived outside the shopping mall where the incident had occurred. The bloodstains on the ground had already been cleaned away, and the security cordons nearby had been removed.

Seeing Yan Ye lower her head with a solemn, troubled expression, Tang Xu was deeply moved. She really did take his death seriously. His money had not been wasted.

“What do we do next?”

Yan Ye answered without thinking, “We can try contacting the person who gave me the business card.”

“What?”

Yan Ye came to her senses and realized what she had just said.

“I mean, do you remember who else was near you at the time?”

Tang Xu shook his head. He could not remember at all.

“There was a room. It seemed as if the three of us were in it. They were speaking words I couldn’t understand. Someone whispered an apology into my ear, and then I drifted lightly down to the ground.”

Someone must have deliberately erased Tang Xu’s memories, perhaps out of fear that he would seek revenge.

For now, the only way to uncover the truth was to return to the scene of the incident.

“The mall is closed. How are we supposed to get inside?”

“You’re not human. Why should you still obey human rules?”

Oh. Right.

“Then you…”

Before he could finish, he saw that most of Yan Ye’s body had already passed through the heavy glass doors. She turned back and looked at him through the glass from inside.

Tang Xu cautiously touched the glass. First his fingers sank through, then his arm, and finally most of his body slipped inside.

“How amazing. Won’t the surveillance cameras detect us?”

Several cameras hung diagonally above the spot where they stood, each monitoring a different area.

“When you reach where I am, you’ll understand why.”

Fine. He could not do that.

The two of them reached the elevators just as they encountered a shadow sneaking furtively into the stairwell beside them. The person was bundled up tightly and wore a pair of sunglasses.

“There are thieves even in such an upscale shopping mall?”

As though she had thought of something, Yan Ye curved her lips into a faint smile.

“It could also be your death warrant.”

In the reflection of the glass, the person’s smile concealed nothing but coldness.

After Tang Xu’s death, the mall had sealed off the floor where the incident occurred and was temporarily refusing all customers.

The elevators had been shut down on that floor as well, and the door connecting to the stairwell had been locked.

They followed Yan Ye all the way to the scene. Just as the other person was about to unlock the door, Tang Xu called out,

“Wait.”

The person before him turned around and looked at him in confusion.

“Yan Ye, did you already know the cause of my death? Could the truth behind this door be something I can’t bear to face?”

Yan Ye gazed at him in silence.

“You’re already dead. What could you possibly be unable to bear? If I told you that the truth behind this door would shatter your entire worldview, would you stop?”

Tang Xu took a deep breath, moved Yan Ye aside, and grasped the large lock himself.

With a metallic click, the iron door opened automatically.

He pushed aside the layers of black mist before him and glimpsed a fragment of the truth.

Dong Zhenzhen had been summoned by a phone call in the middle of the night. She had already been in a foul mood, and now her expression was even more sour. If the person on the phone had not insisted that the matter was urgent and that she had to come to the scene, she might already have been waiting outside Han Lu’s place.

Lately, Han Lu had grown increasingly cold toward her. A woman’s intuition told her that he had probably found someone else. Recently, several coquettishly dressed seductresses had been frequently entering and leaving Han Lu’s office.

This would not do. Han Lu was an opportunity she had worked hard to seize. She could not let him grow tired of her so quickly.

She had to find her next target as soon as possible.

“You called me here this late at night, and to this miserable place at that. What exactly do you want?”

The person standing in the darkness was covered from head to toe, with a hat and mask concealing every inch of their face.

When they spoke, their voice was raspy.

“I suspect Tang Xu isn’t dead.”

Dong Zhenzhen laughed. Her laughter echoed through the silent, empty corridor, where one could hear a pin drop, and sent a chill through the air.

“His corpse is still lying in the coffin, and you’re telling me he isn’t dead? Then who’s lying in there?”

“In any case, this matter is extremely complicated. I advise you to act soon. If this continues, even I won’t be able to protect you. Using a human life to defy the laws of heaven—once this is exposed, you’ll suffer severe backlash.”
