Volume One, Chapter 10: Does He Like Her?
Joe Ye hurriedly lowered his head, his breath trembling slightly. Lu Tingxiao rarely sat with women, let alone enjoyed such pleasant conversation with someone. Could it be... he liked her? The thought made Joe’s chest tighten, suffocating him.
At that moment, the woman noticed her and asked in surprise, “Who is this?”
Lu Tingxiao turned and, seeing Joe, his cold brows revealed no emotion. “She is... my nephew’s wife.”
Joe’s chest ached sharply twice. She clenched her palm hard and forced a smile. “Hello.”
“Hello.”
The woman smiled gently.
Joe looked at Lu Tingxiao, steadying herself with strength. “Uncle, you two continue talking, I’ll head upstairs first.”
Lu Tingxiao’s gaze deepened. “Alright.”
Watching Joe ascend the stairs, he withdrew his attention indifferently. The woman continued chattering away until he suddenly interrupted her.
“Miss Xia, sorry, I don’t like you.”
Xia Mo was clearly stunned. “W-what did you say?”
“You heard me just now.”
Lu Tingxiao spared no face.
Xia Mo became anxious. “Why don’t you like me? Is it because I’m not pretty enough or lack charm? There must be a reason, right?”
Lu Tingxiao was silent for a moment.
“My heart belongs to someone else.”
Xia Mo bit her lip tightly, ashamed and furious. “If you already have someone, why call me here for a blind date?!”
Feeling insulted, she swallowed back tears and grabbed her bag from the table. “Your Lu family may be powerful, but you can’t bully people like this!”
With that, she stormed out in anger.
Unaware of what had happened downstairs, Joe lay on the bed quietly, digesting everything when the door suddenly opened. Without turning, she knew it was Lu Tingxiao.
“That woman is...”
“Did you hear Lu Qian’s generous speech today?”
Joe deliberately avoided their progress, changing the subject.
Lu Tingxiao watched her rise from the bed.
“Mm.”
His voice was deep, irresistibly husky and seductive.
Joe felt frustrated.
“What a pity. If only I had transferred the assets before he returned. But with his abilities, I don’t think he’ll last long in the company.”
Lu Tingxiao knew what she was worried about and sat at the bedside.
“I’ve already taken care of it.”
He paused, then added, “No one will bully you or the kids anymore.”
Joe’s heart surged. Feeling the moment was right, she hesitated for a while before tentatively asking,
“Tingxiao, where did the children’s biological mother go?”
The moment she spoke, she sensed Lu Tingxiao’s aura diminish. The air became eerily quiet.
“That’s a topic I don’t want to discuss.”
After a long silence, the man answered in a steady voice.
Joe felt tightness in her chest. Was it because he didn’t want to speak, or because old feelings for his ex ran deep?
She said no more, silently arriving at her own conclusion.
...
The Lu matriarch’s birthday banquet was attended by the city’s most prominent figures and held at the largest, most prestigious club. The grand hall glittered with gold and jade, guests dressed in exquisite evening wear, clutching wine glasses as they mingled.
As the current leader of Lu Group, the moment Joe appeared, a crowd quickly gathered to toast her.
Today, she wore a silver, form-fitting gown shimmering with countless tiny sequins that caught the light with each step.
“President Qiao looks stunning tonight.”
“Indeed, truly the finest among women.”
“I heard you’re planning cooperation with a foreign company soon. Don’t forget the Zhang Group when that happens, haha.”
Joe maintained a polite smile. “Of course, cooperation for mutual benefit.”
“Yes, mutual benefit!”
Lu Qian walked beside Joe, merely a backdrop. Jealousy flickered in his eyes as he gripped his glass tightly, nearly crushing it.
If he hadn’t disappeared all these years, Joe wouldn’t have achieved such glory.
He downed his drink in one gulp and looked up to meet the Lu matriarch’s gaze from the second floor.
They nodded at each other with a cruel calculation in their eyes.
Lu Qian accepted a glass from a waiter and discreetly sprinkled a white powder into it out of others’ sight. Then, he handed the glass to Joe.
“Xiao Ye, let’s go over there and take a look.”
Joe nodded coldly.
As they walked, someone came to toast her. Not wanting to embarrass the man, Joe sipped the wine.
Watching her swallow, a shadow darkened Lu Qian’s eyes.
Finally escaping the crowd, Joe headed to the dessert table to settle the uneasy turmoil in her stomach but suddenly felt a burning heat surge through her body.
She scratched her neck, breathing heavily.
What was happening...
She glanced back at the crowd, which seemed to ripple and blur strangely.
Unable to stay, Joe staggered back to her room.
In the dim room, her breathing grew heavier.
This was bad.
Someone had drugged her...
Air rushed in and out of her throat as Joe lay on the bed, dazed, fumbling for her phone to call Lu Tingxiao.
No answer.
Just as she was about to try again, the door suddenly burst open.
Then, Joe heard the sound of the door being locked from the outside.
“Who’s there?!”
Instantly on guard, she tried to sit up to see, but a shadow suddenly pinned her down on the bed.
“Lu Qian?!”
Joe’s pupils constricted sharply.
“You drugged me?!”
Lu Qian sneered coldly. “We’re husband and wife. If you hadn’t refused me, why would I need to drug you?”
He stared at Joe’s delicate figure beneath him, his eyes darkening.
He had never cared about Joe before and so hadn’t noticed her beauty, but now, with her chest rising and falling rapidly and her soft, tender skin beneath his hands... it stirred his desire.
His Adam’s apple bobbed. “Don’t be afraid, I’ll be gentle.”
With that, he immediately pressed down.
“Lu Qian!”
Joe pushed against his shoulders. “Get off me!”
But her body was weak, and her struggles were futile.
Lu Qian frantically tore at her dress, planting kisses on her neck. “Joe Ye, you and Uncle forced me into this...”
His breathing grew rapidI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
