The floodwaters receded overnight, leaving the chaotic streets littered with stinking garbage and corpses. Ning Jue, Xie An, and Qi Zheng wore masks, each carrying a 75-liter hiking backpack, trudging forward with difficulty.

A group of zombies had gathered around, seemingly feasting on a man lying on the ground. They heard footsteps and turned sharply. Ning Jue’s Adam’s apple bobbed as his vocal cords and nasal cavity vibrated, emitting a hissing roar. The zombies immediately scattered like frightened birds.

"Your ability is incredible," Xie An said admiringly.

"I wonder if we will awaken," Qi Zheng said, watching the fleeing zombies. "I heard the military is registering those who awaken. Those who do can move into the military zone."

Others might not know, but Ning Jue would never register. In this apocalypse, zombies roamed freely, and people struggled to survive, even willing to shoot over a can of food. Meanwhile, Ning Jue’s supplies filled his entire bedroom, enough to support three people.

There was no elevator in the building; the three had to climb the stairs. Ning Jue’s physical condition was terrifyingly strong—he climbed 33 floors without any soreness or fatigue.

"Brother," Ning Lin obediently took the backpack.

"Any problems?" Ning Jue asked.

Ning Lin lowered her head guiltily. "Brother, I was a bit hungry this morning, so I cooked a pack of instant noodles and ate it."

"Someone smelled it and knocked on every door. I... I opened the door."

Seeing Ning Jue’s surprised expression, she shrank her neck.

"Brother, it was just a woman starving to the point of fainting, and she had a child with her."

"I thought they looked pitiful, so I gave them two packs of biscuits and some water."

The worry had come true.

With the floodwaters gone and zombies surrounding the city, traveling was extremely dangerous. Yet, if they moved in coordinated groups, they could still venture out. High-rise buildings became prime locations for scavenging supplies.

Today it was just polite requests for food; tomorrow, driven by hunger, they might break in by force.

Half an hour later, Qi Zheng and Xie An returned, panting.

After discussing with them, Ning Jue decided that since their place was already under watch, they had to move soon.

"Let's eat to replenish our strength, then prepare to relocate."

"Brother, where are we moving to?"

"Mid-mountain villa..."

After careful consideration, Ning Jue chose the mid-mountain villa because of its high elevation and rare human activity. Another key reason was that it was only two kilometers from the museum.

After dinner, Ning Lin sat at the table drawing and writing, while the others went to the rooftop to retrieve Ning Jue’s old collection.

These useless gold and jeweled items were now their lifeline.

Ning Lin handed Ning Jue a shopping list covering nearly everything they needed.

Qiao Yuan’s grocery store was small and poorly stocked; many items on Ning Lin’s list were unavailable there.

But that didn’t mean they didn’t exist in her world.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

"Open the door! Open up!"

Suddenly, a loud bang came from the door!

Ning Jue quickly put away the list and shielded his sister behind him.

---

"Give us the food, or I’ll kill you!"

Xie An and Qi Zheng gripped their kitchen knives tightly, nervously watching the door.

"Ning Jue, what do we do? Sounds like there’s more than one."

"Brother... I’m scared," Ning Lin said, her face pale as she clung to Ning Jue’s arm.

Crash!

The security door was kicked open, revealing four men and one woman.

The woman pointed at Ning Lin and yelled sharply, “Their bedroom has all the food! If we take it, we’ll survive!”

"We’re all neighbors. Can you really watch us starve? Give me the food..." said a muscular bald man who looked like a mountain standing there.

He glanced at the woman hiding behind Ning Jue and smiled lecherously before changing his tone.

"There’s even a fine-looking girl. If she keeps me company for a few days, I’ll spare your lives!"

Ning Jue narrowed his eyes, muscles tensed.

"You can have the food, but my sister will never go with you."

That was the greatest concession he could make.

The bald man raised his axe, veins bulging in his arms. "You don’t want to cooperate?"

"Then I’ll kill the three of you and have my fun with her! Hahaha!"

He swung the axe down at Ning Jue’s head.

But the gruesome scene he imagined never came to be.

At the moment the axe swung through the air, Ning Jue reached out.

His left hand grabbed the bald man’s arm like an iron clamp.

While the man was stunned, Ning Jue mercilessly slashed with his knife at a sharp angle, with full force.

"Fshh!"

The bald man felt a cold sting in his chest. Looking down, he saw the blade embedded deep in his chest, with less than ten centimeters of handle left.

With one decisive strike, Ning Jue didn’t pause. He withdrew the knife and stepped forward past the man.

The blade struck again, and Ning Jue’s eyes glinted with murderous intent.

Blood splattered and fell in droplets.

Moments later, the four men collapsed to the ground, trembling and moaning in despair.

"No, no, don’t kill me! They forced me!" the woman trembled, drenched in her companions’ blood.

A yellowish liquid trickled between her legs, emitting a foul urine stench.

The fierce fighting and blood attracted the attention of zombies; several staggered figures were approaching from the stairwell corner.

The woman, unarmed, anxiously looked at the advancing zombies and quickly clasped her hands in a pleading gesture toward Ning Jue.

"Please, let me in to hide. I beg you!"

"What’s your name?" Ning Jue asked coldly.

The woman hesitated, thinking she was saved.

"I-I'm Hua Ling. If you save me, I’ll sleep with you every day. I... I’m good at it."

A shiver passed through Ning Jue’s throat.

The zombies in the hallway lifted their heads upon hearing the voice, their grayish-white eyes fixed on Hua Ling.

"Hua Ling, go to hell."

With that, Ning Jue slammed the security door shut.

"No... ahI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
