Volume One, Chapter 19: The Mystic Herb Returns Home, Storm Clouds Gather
Lin Fan stepped through the grand gates of the Divine Martial Academy, exhaustion evident in his frame yet unable to dim the radiant light in his eyes. Clutched tightly in his hand was a jade box, emanating a soft, pulsating glow like a beating heart, drawing the attention of all nearby. That gentle radiance, though subdued, carried a potent energy ripple that spread outward like waves, causing the very air around him to tremble subtly.
A peculiar, intoxicating herbal aroma filled the atmosphere, refreshing and invigorating, awakening the spirits of those present. The once bustling academy square had fallen utterly silent. Every gaze was fixed upon Lin Fan as if time itself had paused in reverence. He stood tall and resolute; his previously slender silhouette now exuded an imposing aura that commanded respect and deterred direct confrontation.
His garments were tattered, stained with dirt and blood—battle scars from his fierce encounter with a guardian beast—adding a heroic edge to his appearance. Each step he took was firm and unwavering, as though he trod upon the hearts of onlookers, shaking their very souls. The square was so still that even a pin dropping could be heard.
Amidst the silence, seeds of jealousy began to sprout in the hearts of some students. “He just got lucky; what’s so great about that?” A sharp, sneering voice shattered the calm like a stone thrown into a still lake, sending ripples of dissent. “Yeah, maybe he just stumbled upon a lucky find. Doesn’t mean he’s some kind of hero!” another voice chimed in, dripping with scorn and derision.
These whispered barbs slithered into Lin Fan’s ears like venomous snakes, stirring uneasy waves on the tranquil surface of his heart. He clenched his fists tightly, veins bulging on the back of his hands as a surge of indignation roiled within his chest. Suddenly, he whipped his head around, eyes blazing like fiery swords, piercing straight toward the whispering students.
The tension in the air stretched taut like a drawn bowstring, ready to snap. “You…” Lin Fan’s voice was low and hoarse, yet carried an unyielding authority. Before he could continue, a commanding voice boomed over the murmurs.
“Enough!” Mentor Zhao parted the crowd and stepped before Lin Fan, his gaze sharp as he swept over the whispering students. “Lin Fan ventured into perilous lands to complete his mission, battling a guardian beast and barely escaping with this precious spirit herb. What right do you have to speak ill here?” Mentor Zhao’s words landed like thunderclaps across the square, silencing the students instantly.
Feeling the trust and support from his mentor, warmth flooded Lin Fan’s heart. He looked gratefully at Mentor Zhao, his eyes brimming with moisture. The mentor patted his shoulder with earnest gravity and said, “Lin Fan, ignore those rumors. Everyone sees your effort and dedication.”
The students around, subdued by Zhao’s words, began to reflect on their own behavior. Some hung their heads in shame, while others cast admiring glances toward Lin Fan. Standing straighter than before, the weight of grievance and resentment lifted from Lin Fan’s heart, replaced by a swelling confidence and pride.
---
A commanding voice then echoed from afar: “Lin Fan, well done.” The crowd turned to see the Academy Dean approaching slowly, flanked by a group of elders. The Dean stopped before Lin Fan and examined the jade box carefully. “This spirit herb holds great significance for the academy. You have done a great deed.” Though the Dean’s tone was measured, it brimmed with affirmation and encouragement.
Lin Fan trembled with excitement, never having expected the Dean’s personal recognition and praise. Taking a steadying breath, he respectfully offered the jade box to the Dean. “Your disciple is honored to have fulfilled his mission.”
The Dean’s approval shone like a golden light, illuminating Lin Fan’s path ahead. The entire academy erupted in fervor over the matter, and Lin Fan’s name became the center of every conversation.
Just as everyone anticipated generous rewards for Lin Fan, the Dean’s voice cut through the buzz: “Lin Fan…” The Dean paused, his gaze penetrating and weighty as he slowly continued, “Your courage and perseverance are admirable, and you completed this mission brilliantly. However…” The drawn-out pause rendered the square deathly silent, every heart holding its breath.
A chill gripped Lin Fan’s heart, a foreboding sense rising within him. “Recently, there have been disturbances in the academy’s ‘Xuanming Forbidden Realm.’ We require a brave and promising disciple to investigate.”
The announcement was met with gasps. The Xuanming Forbidden Realm was the academy’s most perilous zone, rife with danger and mystery, where most who entered never returned. Lin Fan’s pupils constricted sharply as a cold shiver ran from his feet to his crown. The surrounding air seemed to freeze, suffocatingly heavy.
Countless eyes fixed upon him—some shocked, some worried, others gloating. Lin Fan drew a deep breath, striving to steady his nerves. He understood that the Dean’s choice was both a vote of confidence and a stern test.
Clenching his fists, palms moist with sweat, his heart beat with equal parts fear and exhilaration. Fear from the unknown dangers lurking within the forbidden realm, excitement from the allure of the challenge ahead. “I accept this mission,” he declared, voice trembling yet resolute and commanding.
The Dean nodded approvingly. “Very well, Lin Fan. Your courage pleases me. But the Xuanming Forbidden Realm is fraught with peril. Exercise utmost caution.”
“I understand,” Lin Fan replied with steady resolve, meeting the Dean’s gaze.
“Be vigilant inside the forbidden realm. Prepare yourself; you depart at dawn tomorrow.” With that, the Dean turned, leaving behind a meaningful silhouette.
Lin Fan stood rooted, watching the Dean’s retreating figure, his mind awash with myriad thoughts. He could feel the eyes upon him—some envious, some jealous, some concerned. Drawing a deep breath, he suppressed all emotions and turned toward his quarters.
“Lin Fan…” Mentor Zhao’s voice called from behind, tinged with worry and care. After the Dean’s departure, Zhao approached and gently patted his shoulder. “Lin Fan, the Xuanming Forbidden Realm is exceptionally dangerous. You must be extremely cautious.”
---
Lin Fan nodded, acknowledging his mentor’s concern but resolute in his decision. “Mentor, rest assured. I will do my utmost.”
Mentor Zhao sighed; he knew Lin Fan’s nature—once his mind was set, it rarely wavered. “The Dean’s choice reflects his trust in your abilities. But do not underestimate the perils within the forbidden realm. Do not overreach.”
Lin Fan bowed solemnly. “I will remember your teachings.”
After a brief pause, Mentor Zhao withdrew a jade pendant from his robes and handed it to Lin Fan. “This pendant was obtained from the outskirts of the forbidden realm long ago. It may aid you.”
Lin Fan accepted the pendant, its smooth surface cool to the touch, a faint refreshing energy invigorating his spirit. Gratefully, he looked at Zhao. “Thank you, Mentor.”
Zhao smiled. “Go now. We await your triumphant return.”
Lin Fan turned and strode forward with firm steps.
At that moment, the Dean’s voice rang out once more. “Lin Fan, wait.”
He paused and faced the Dean.
The Dean approached solemnly. “This mission is no trivial matter. Should you succeed, the academy will grant you unprecedented resources: including, but not limited to, heavenly-grade cultivation techniques, miraculous elixirs, and access to the academy’s secret realm.”
The Dean’s words struck like thunder, reverberating through the square.
The students erupted into a frenzy, casting envious, jealous, and resentful glances at Lin Fan. Heavenly-grade techniques, miraculous elixirs, secret realms—these were the treasures they all dreamed of.
Lin Fan inhaled deeply, sensing their envy but refusing to let it breed arrogance. He knew these rewards were but recognition for his achievements; his true goal was to strengthen himself and protect those dear to him.
“Thank you, Dean!” His voice was strong and confident.
The Dean nodded with satisfaction. “Go forth.”
Once more, Lin Fan turned and strode purposefully toward the academy’s forbidden realm. Though all eyes remained fixed upon him, he paid them no mind. His sole desire was to complete the mission swiftly, and then…
He stepped into the forbidden realm, where a chilling, oppressive aura immediately enveloped him...
