Volume One, Chapter Eight: Unveiling the Conspiracy, Bravely Breaking Through the Shadows
He looked around vigilantly, only to find the area completely deserted, save for the rustling of leaves in the wind.
"Who's there? Stop playing games!" Lin Fan shouted, his voice echoing through the empty training grounds.
Only a deeper silence answered him, as if the sound had been merely a hallucination. But Lin Fan knew it was no illusion; it was a genuine threat, a gaze from the shadows.
The next day, Lin Fan reported the incident to the Academy Dean and Elder Qingfeng. The Dean’s expression grew grave as he tapped his fingers on the table, pondering for a moment before saying, "It seems we must take action immediately." Elder Qingfeng nodded in agreement, "This matter is of great importance and must be thoroughly investigated." With the Academy's support, Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er began a deep investigation into the secret organization.
Following their previous clues, they cautiously infiltrated the secret organization's stronghold. Located in an abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city, the site was permeated with a mysterious aura, the air thick with a faint scent of blood. Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er held their breath, stepping lightly as they approached the factory gates.
"Creeeak—" The rusted iron gate let out a harsh, grating sound, appearing jarring in the silent night. Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er exchanged a look, a flicker of resolve in their eyes.
The moment they stepped inside, an alarm blared, its piercing sound shattering the night sky.
"Oh no, we've been discovered!" Lin Wan'er whispered.
Almost simultaneously, a group of figures in black surged from the depths of the factory, surrounding them.
"Kill them!" the leader of the black-clad men commanded, and a fierce battle erupted instantly.
Lin Fan did not hesitate to release his Wood Spirit Body, powerful wood-elemental energy surging around him. Vines lashed out like frenzied pythons, entangling and binding the attackers. Lin Wan'er provided support from the side; as her slender fingers danced, trails of pale blue light fell upon Lin Fan, bestowing various buffs upon him.
Lin Fan’s attacks grew increasingly fierce. Every punch carried a crushing force, driving the black-clad men back step by step. Blood splattered, staining the ground, and the air grew heavy with the stench of carnage. Standing back-to-back, Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er fought off the siege with all their might.
"I didn't expect you to hold out for so long," a cold, chilling voice suddenly resonated.
A figure draped in black robes, his face hidden beneath a hood, stepped slowly from the darkness. It was the mysterious leader of the secret organization. With his hands behind his back, his eyes, hidden in the shadows, stared at Lin Fan with the coldness of a viper.
"Heh, young man, your talent is impressive, and your strength is not bad either," the leader’s voice carried a sinister, melodic quality, seeping into their ears like venom. "How about it? Interested in joining us? I can give you everything you desire—power, status, and an even broader future."
Lin Fan sneered, the Wood Spirit energy in his hands surging even more violently.
"Join you? Based on the word of you cowards who hide in the dark? Your deeds are already devoid of conscience; everyone has the right to punish you!" His gaze was like a torch, his tone firm and unwavering.
Hearing this, the leader’s face beneath the hood twisted slightly. The calm he had feigned shattered, revealing his sinister true nature.
"If that is the case, then don't blame me for being ruthless!" The leader’s tone turned ghastly, as if from a demon of the underworld.
He threw his hands open, and a thick, black mist poured from his body, instantly shrouding the entire factory. The mist carried a suffocating pressure, as if countless wronged souls were wailing within it. Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er felt their bodies sink, as if crushed by an invisible, massive stone. Their movements grew sluggish, and their breathing became labored, as if they were trapped in a quagmire.
Lin Wan'er’s face turned pale, beads of sweat breaking out on her forehead as her small frame began to tremble.
"Brother Lin Fan, I feel so terrible..." she whispered, her voice laced with pain.
Lin Fan’s heart sank. He could sense the terrifying power contained within the black mist; this was no ordinary technique, but a powerful forbidden art. He gritted his teeth, trying to break free, but the invisible force held them like a cage, as if it were about to consume them completely. He clenched his fists, sensing the stagnation of the spiritual energy in his body, and a strong sense of powerlessness welled up in him.
He looked up toward the darkness. There, the mysterious leader’s silhouette flickered, like a beast waiting to strike. Those cold eyes stared at them like a serpent, the corner of his mouth hooked into a cruel smirk.
"Give up the struggle; you cannot escape..." The leader’s voice, filled with triumph, echoed through the empty factory like a death knell. Suddenly, he stopped speaking, casting a meaningful look at Lin Fan, his eyes filled with a strange expectation. Then, the leader slowly raised his hand...
Lin Fan gritted his teeth, feeling the stagnation of his spiritual energy. Yet, in this desperate moment, countless images of his training flashed through his mind. The spiritual energy in his meridians surged like rushing rivers, and at this moment, these rivers seemed to converge, churn, and seek a breakthrough.
"Ah—!" Lin Fan roared. A crisp sound resonated from his Dantian, as if something had shattered, and a brand-new force erupted from within him.
His Wood Spirit Body underwent a sudden transformation. On the once-emerald vines, points of golden light appeared. These specks of gold danced like flames, carrying a searing heat capable of burning everything. He felt the black mist binding him begin to dissolve under the scorching golden light. His body shuddered, and the invisible pressure vanished into thin air, replaced by an unprecedented, powerful strength.
Lin Fan’s eyes turned blood-red, like an awakened beast. He kicked off the ground, shattering it, and shot toward the mysterious leader like an arrow released from a bow. The vines wrapped around his arms now burned like red-hot iron whips, lashing out at the leader with a piercing sound.
The leader clearly had not expected Lin Fan to break through his forbidden art. The cold smirk on his face stiffened instantly, and he hurriedly waved the black mist to defend himself. However, the golden vines, imbued with the flame of destruction, easily tore through the mist’s defense and struck him viciously.
"Ah!" the leader shrieked in agony. His black robes shredded, revealing his withered body. Where the vines had struck, shocking charred marks remained, emitting the pungent smell of burnt flesh.
Lin Fan did not relent. He swung the vines again, like a violent storm, lashing out at the leader frantically. Each strike carried such immense power that the leader was forced back repeatedly, vomiting blood. The surrounding black-clad men, seeing their leader so easily overpowered, fell into a panic.
"Damn you!" The leader wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, staring fixedly at Lin Fan.
Lin Fan’s heart sank; he felt a massive conspiracy hidden in the leader's words, and an ominous premonition welled up within him. He had to stop this.
Seeing the shock and anger in Lin Fan’s eyes, the leader gave a cold, sinister smile. Suddenly, he raised his right hand, and a black vortex slowly emerged in his palm, seemingly containing the power to swallow everything, chilling to the bone.
"The game has only just begun..." the leader’s voice was low and hoarse. He then slammed his palm onto the ground, and a powerful force erupted instantly. The ground gave a thunderous boom, and then, everything fell into a deathly silence.
The tremors grew more violent, and cracks spread like a spiderweb. A powerful suction force emanated from the vortex, and Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er felt their bodies being uncontrollably drawn toward its center.
Lin Fan acted quickly, grabbing Lin Wan'er’s hand while channeling all his Wood Spirit energy. The vines wrapped around the surrounding ruins like giant pythons, attempting to resist the powerful suction. However, the vortex's power was too immense; the vines snapped one by one, and Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er were pulled closer and closer to the center.
Lin Wan'er, her face pale, gripped Lin Fan’s hand tightly.
Just as they reached the critical moment, a golden light descended from the sky, enveloping them. They felt a powerful force wrap around them, and the suction vanished without a trace. Lin Fan looked up to see the Academy Dean and Elder Qingfeng standing in mid-air, their hands forming seals as powerful spiritual energy radiated from them.
"Dean! Elder!" Lin Fan felt a surge of joy.
The Dean’s expression was grave as he said in a deep voice, "Lin Fan, take Wan'er and leave first! Leave this to us!"
Lin Fan knew this was no time for stubbornness. He nodded and quickly led Lin Wan'er away from the factory. Not long after they left, the ground of the factory collapsed with a roar, and a massive black vortex appeared, as if ready to swallow everything. The Dean and Elder Qingfeng joined forces to combat the vortex’s power. The clash of powerful spiritual energy created a deafening roar, and the entire factory shook violently, as if it might collapse at any moment.
Lin Fan and Lin Wan'er returned to the Academy with the news, and the Dean urgently summoned all the elders to discuss countermeasures.
"Everyone, our Academy is facing an unprecedented crisis!" the Dean said with a solemn expression. "The strength of this secret organization far exceeds our imagination. They hide in the shadows, employing endless schemes and tricks. We must unite as one to stand against them!"
The elders voiced their agreement, deeply aware of the gravity of the situation. Filled with righteous indignation, they swore to fight the secret organization to the death. The entire Academy united, deciding to launch a full-scale confrontation. This event became a turning point for the Academy, with everyone preparing for the battle to come.
"Lin Fan, you will be the key to this battle!" The Dean patted Lin Fan on the shoulder, speaking with deep earnestness.
Lin Fan’s eyes were firm. He knew he carried a heavy responsibility, and he would give his all to protect the Academy and his friends.
"Everyone, prepare for battle!" The Dean’s command resounded throughout the Academy, and a murderous atmosphere began to spread...
