Chapter 13: Come Home with Me
"Do I care about her?" Pei Qizhou sneered, his eyes filled with a trace of disdain and mockery.
"Chu Xun, you are too naive. Everything I do is to ensure that my interests remain unharmed."
He paused, then continued, "Yao Shan chose you; that was her choice. But her choice should not affect me."
Chu Xun stared intently at Pei Qizhou, feeling the coldness and ruthlessness in the other man's words. He knew that Pei Qizhou's power and influence within the hospital were not to be underestimated, but he also knew he could not back down at this moment.
"Pei Qizhou," Chu Xun said, his voice low and firm, "I will not let you use your power to harm innocent people. Uncle Yao's health and life should not be bargaining chips in your power struggle. If you continue this, I will report you to the hospital's administration, and I will even contact the media to expose your actions."
Pei Qizhou's smile vanished, his gaze turning icy. "Do you think you have the ability? Do you think you can stand against me?" His words were laced with threats and provocation.
"Pei Qizhou, what exactly do you want!" Yao Shan's tone was heavy with anxiety. Her father's condition simply could not withstand this; if things continued this way, her father would lose his life.
"I want you to come home with me now," Pei Qizhou said in a deep voice.
"Home?" Yao Shan gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Which home?"
Where was her home? The place that housed another woman? The place where her husband did not love her and her son despised her? Was that her home? How truly ridiculous.
"Our home," Pei Qizhou said, enunciating every word.
"We don't have a home anymore." Yao Shan's eyes were as flat as still water, showing no emotion.
Pei Qizhou's expression darkened; he clearly had not expected Yao Shan to refuse so resolutely. He clenched his fists, struggling to control his temper, yet a faint, imperceptible tremor remained in his voice: "Yao Shan, do not force me to take extreme measures."
Seeing this, Chu Xun immediately stepped in front of Yao Shan, his gaze steady and calm. "Pei Qizhou, you have done enough. Now, it is time to stop all of this. If you continue, I promise you will regret it."
Pei Qizhou let out a cold laugh, seemingly indifferent to Chu Xun's threat. "Regret? Chu Xun, you underestimate me. I, Pei Qizhou, never regret the things I do."
"I will go back with you," Yao Shan said, having calmed down.
She knew what kind of man Pei Qizhou was, and she knew she could not defeat him. For the sake of her father, she had no choice but to go with him.
Yao Shan's decision shocked Chu Xun; he had not expected her to compromise for her father's safety. He gripped her hand tightly, trying to offer some comfort and strength. "Yao Shan, you don't have to do this. I will find another way," he whispered, his eyes filled with worry.
Pei Qizhou watched this scene with a satisfied smile curling his lips. He turned and said to Chu Xun, "Dr. Chu, you had better remember that some things are beyond your control." With that, he signaled for Yao Shan to follow him.
Yao Shan followed behind Pei Qizhou, each step feeling as though she were walking on the edge of a blade. Her heart was filled with conflict and pain, but she knew that for her father's sake, she had to yield for the time being.
Chu Xun watched their retreating figures, his heart heavy with anger and a sense of powerlessness.
"Yao Shan, you know my temper better than anyone," Pei Qizhou said, walking ahead of her, his voice devoid of warmth. "I will not tolerate any resistance." His words carried the weight of an unquestionable command.
Yao Shan did not respond. Her heart had gone numb; she simply followed Pei Qizhou's pace mechanically. She knew that once she stepped through those doors, she would be trapped in that cold cage once again. She sat in the car listlessly, Pei Qizhou beside her, but she did not want to look at him.
As the car slowly pulled away from the hospital, Yao Shan gazed at the outside world through the window, her heart heavy with helplessness and despair. She knew that once she returned to that so-called "home," she would lose all her freedom and dignity. Pei Qizhou sat beside her with the smile of a victor, as if everything were entirely within his grasp.
The car finally stopped in front of a luxurious villa. Pei Qizhou got out first and opened the door for Yao Shan. She hesitated for a moment before stepping out. She looked up at the building she once thought was a home, yet now it felt so alien and frigid.
Pei Qizhou led Yao Shan into the villa in silence. That was until Pei Yi's voice cut through the air.
"Dad, why did you bring her back?" Pei Yi looked at Yao Shan without even calling her Mother. His tone was filled with clear dissatisfaction and hostility, his eyes brimming with contempt.
"Go back to sleep," Pei Qizhou commanded, looking at Pei Yi.
Yao Shan stood there, and faced with Pei Yi's hostility, a wave of inexplicable sorrow surged within her. She had once tried so hard to be a good mother, but clearly, her role in this house had become irrelevant. She did not respond to Pei Yi's questioning, simply following Pei Qizhou’s lead into the house that she had once known but now felt like a stranger to.
Pei Qizhou led her through the grand living room and up to a room on the second floor. He opened the door and gestured for her to enter.
"Do you have to be so ruthless?" Yao Shan asked, looking at him. She only wanted to live out her final three months in peace; why did he have to treat her this way?
"I am simply taking you home," Pei Qizhou said indifferently.
Yao Shan walked into the room and looked around. This had once been the place where she and Pei Qizhou lived together, yet now it felt exceptionally cold and empty. A complex feeling rose in her heart—a mix of nostalgia for the past and helplessness regarding the present.
Pei Qizhou stood at the doorway without entering. "Rest here," he said coldly. "I will arrange for someone to take care of your daily needs tomorrow."
"I need to go to work," Yao Shan said, ignoring his statement to voice her own intent. She had not resigned from her job, nor did she wish to. In these final days, she did not want to be bored, and for her, work was a way to relieve the pressure.
Pei Qizhou’s brow furrowed slightly, clearly displeased by her persistence. "Quit. The Pei family can afford to support you."
Yao Shan shook her head. Her voice was calm, yet it revealed a firm resolve. "I need to work. It makes me feel alive." She did not want her life to be completely controlled by him.
Pei Qizhou was silent for a moment, then said coldly, "Suit yourself."
With that, he turned and left, leaving Yao Shan alone in the room.
