Chapter 43: Just Want a Divorce
"I need to find Yao Shan," Pei Qizhou stated, getting straight to the point.
His visit to the Chu Group was not for any professional matter; he had come solely to find her. Between him and Chu Tianming, there was clearly no business worth discussing in depth.
Faced with Pei Qizhou’s direct demand, Chu Tianming sighed softly, his expression troubled. Maintaining his composure, he explained, "Mr. Pei, Yao Shan is currently extremely busy. Our company's project is at a critical stage, and as the lead, she truly cannot spare a moment. Could you perhaps consider scheduling another meeting at a different time?"
Hearing this, Pei Qizhou furrowed his brows, looking visibly displeased. "Mr. Chu, using such excuses to brush me off is quite inappropriate," he remarked, his tone laced with clear dissatisfaction. After all, Yao Shan had only recently joined the Chu Group; even if she were exceptionally talented, it was unlikely she was already so swamped that she could not be pulled away.
"I need to go check if her meeting is over," Chu Tianming said, his brow tightly locked as a hint of worry crossed his expression. In truth, he was lying to Pei Qizhou, as Yao Shan was not attending any meeting at all. Chu Tianming knew very well that Yao Shan had no desire to see Pei Qizhou, which was why he had fabricated the excuse. However, he had not expected Pei Qizhou to see through his lie.
Chu Tianming stood up, walked to the door, and knocked gently on the door of Yao Shan's office. A moment later, her voice came from within: "Please, come in." Chu Tianming opened the door, stepped inside, and closed it behind him. Facing Yao Shan, he said, "Pei Qizhou is here. He insists on seeing you."
Hearing that name, Yao Shan’s brows knit together, a flicker of complex emotion appearing in her eyes. She took a deep breath, struggling to remain composed, and replied calmly, "Tell him I am very busy and have no time to see him."
Facing her decision, Chu Tianming felt utterly helpless. He could only shake his head and return to his office, relaying Yao Shan’s words to Pei Qizhou word for word.
Upon hearing Chu Tianming, Pei Qizhou’s expression turned grim. He stood up and said firmly, "In that case, I will wait here until she is finished."
Seeing this, Chu Tianming knew that further persuasion would be futile. He sighed softly and gestured for Pei Qizhou to do as he pleased.
Pei Qizhou sat on the sofa, his gaze fixed firmly out the window. He had made up his mind: he would see Yao Shan no matter what and uncover the truth behind her sudden discharge from the hospital. He was not willing to let things end in such a vague and unresolved manner.
Time ticked by, and the office fell into a prolonged silence, the air thick with a stifling stillness. Occasionally, Chu Tianming would glance up at Pei Qizhou, who remained deeply focused, as if pondering some monumental issue, his brows tightly knitted as he weighed his thoughts.
After several hours of intensive work, the door to Yao Shan’s office finally opened slowly. She stepped out with a light gait, having clearly completed her pending tasks. Seeing this, Chu Tianming rose immediately. He turned to Yao Shan, his tone tinged with urgency: "Yao Shan, Mr. Pei has been waiting for you quite patiently. He insists on seeing you."
Hearing this, Yao Shan turned her gaze toward Pei Qizhou. A flicker of indescribable, complex emotion crossed her eyes, but in the end, she gave a slight nod, signaling for him to follow her into her office.
Pei Qizhou stood up and followed her inside. The atmosphere between them felt subtle and strained. Once the office door had slowly closed behind them, Yao Shan turned to face him. "Mr. Pei, is there something important you need from me?" she asked in a calm, firm tone.
"Yao Shan, do you really have to make it like this?" Pei Qizhou’s voice held a hint of helplessness. He did not understand why he felt so powerless and defeated in her presence. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress his inner turmoil, and asked softly, with concern, "Is your health alright?" He did not ask about anything else, only showing concern for her physical well-being.
"That is no concern of yours, Mr. Pei," she replied, her tone remaining indifferent. Her smile seemed to hide a sense of distance, as if an invisible barrier had been quietly erected between them.
Pei Qizhou’s heart tightened; he could not hide his confusion and anxiety. "Why did you block my number?" he asked, looking at her.
"Mr. Pei, is there anything left for us to say to each other?" Yao Shan looked at him, her eyes searching, as if seeking an answer. Blocking him was only natural; it was her way of making a clean break from the past and a hope for the future.
"Have you drafted the divorce agreement yet?" she continued, her tone revealing a hint of impatience. She only wanted to divorce quickly and end this meaningless marriage. This was the only thing she cared about now; her heart was no longer here, and she simply wanted to leave.
"I told you, I respect Pei Yi’s wishes." Their son did not agree, so he would not divorce. This was his responsibility to his family and his promise to his son.
A flash of complexity crossed Yao Shan’s eyes at his response, but she quickly regained her composure. She knew she could not be swayed by emotion; she needed to stay calm. She took a deep breath and said firmly, "Mr. Pei, since that is the case, there is no need for us to continue dragging this out. Please go; I have a lot of work to handle." She knew she needed to focus on her career rather than this shattered marriage.
In Yao Shan’s view, there was nothing left to discuss besides the divorce. Their relationship had reached its end, and she only wished to end this marriage as soon as possible and start a new life.
"Yao Shan, you aren't just afraid that I'll disturb your work, are you?" Pei Qizhou’s gaze fell upon her desk. There were two water glasses on it; clearly, she was not alone.
"I suppose you and Chu Xun will only be happy after I’m gone," he said coldly.
"Then there is no need to trouble yourself with that, Mr. Pei," Yao Shan replied dismissively. She did not care what he said about her anymore; to her, it was completely irrelevant.
