Chapter 23: Days Begin to Hold Promise
On the way back to the old house, Mrs. Li counted the fifty copper coins she had received from Tiger’s mother and asked Wenyang curiously, “Yao Yao, does the county magistrate really handle quarrels like this?”
Wenyang, holding onto Da Tou’s hand, smiled. “Of course not. The county magistrate has better things to do than meddle in such trivial matters.”
She was making it up as she went, casually spinning tales to fool others.
Madam Luo shot her a glare. “You all have quite some nerve, daring to get into a fight with those rash boys from the Li family.”
Wenyang pouted. “They were bullying Da Tou. What else were we supposed to do?”
Da Tou looked up at Wenyang, gripping her hand even tighter.
Luo glanced down at her obedient little grandson, who was now so well-behaved, a far cry from the fierce determination he’d shown earlier when ready to take on the Li family. She was genuinely surprised by his earlier show of courage.
“The Li boys aren’t easy to deal with. You’ve made enemies with them now. In the future, when you go out, make sure to look after your sisters, and if things go wrong, run. Don’t take risks, understand?” Luo admonished her grandchildren.
Most of them usually weren’t afraid, but once they realized Wenyang had only been bluffing the Li family, a bit of fear crept in—along with newfound respect for Wenyang’s boldness in standing up to them.
