Chapter 12: She Possessed a Striking and Distinctive Beauty
The Chief Editor’s office director, Han Mo—the woman who had just spoken up—stepped forward and looked at Nan Zhi, who was bowing in apology. She said, “Raise your head.”
Nan Zhi straightened up gracefully.
Though her clothes were dampened by the rain, it did nothing to diminish her radiant and stunning appearance or the elegance of her bearing. Her lips were red, her teeth white, her gaze clear, naturally beautiful. Most importantly, she was neither shy nor coy; innocence and allure intertwined in her, making her simply delightful to behold.
Even though the television station boasted many beautiful female anchors, and most of today's interviewees were young and attractive, this kind of distinctive beauty—one that seemed destined for popularity—was rare.
Nan Zhi’s beauty carried no hint of aggression.
The male judges’ eyes were fixed on her.
Han Mo gave a slight cough, conferred briefly with the other judges, and granted Nan Zhi an interview opportunity.
Han Mo handed Nan Zhi a script for the Lantern Festival Fireworks Gala, instructing her to memorize its contents within ten minutes.
Though she had been given ten minutes, memorizing such a lengthy script was no easy task.
As Nan Zhi memorized the lines, one of the male judges quietly asked Han Mo, “You gave the previous candidates half an hour, and their scripts were easier. Isn’t this a little harsh for her?”
“Those who arrive late must be more exceptional if they wish to seize the opportunity,” Han Mo replied sternly.
“If it were me, I probably couldn’t memorize it in ten minutes. She’s beautiful, and her voice is pleasant too,” the male judge sighed. “I doubt she’ll pass the first round. What a shame.”
A seasoned female anchor, Shu Meng, interjected, casting a glance at Nan Zhi in the corner. Women always felt a twinge of dissatisfaction and jealousy toward those who were too beautiful. “You men are so superficial. Our anchors need both talent and beauty—not just a pretty face with no substance.”
The male judge chuckled, “How do you know this young lady is just a pretty face, Shu?”
At that moment, a sweet and clear voice rang out, “Judges, I’m ready.”
Shu Meng glanced at the clock—less than ten minutes had passed. She scoffed inwardly, so eager to show off; let’s see how she embarrasses herself.
Nan Zhi stood before the judges, her posture elegant, her smile warm and natural. “Spring blooms in the New Year, flowers open for the Lantern Festival, fire trees glitter with silver light, and the bright moon chases the shadows…”
Her voice was rich and melodious, her pronunciation crisp. Pitch, tone, and rhythm shifted in harmony with the script’s content.
Most remarkably, she had memorized the entire script.
Han Mo suppressed her excitement. She exchanged glances with the other judges, then said to Nan Zhi, “Remember to come back on time for the second round in a week.”
“Thank you, judges.” Nan Zhi bowed again in gratitude.
After Nan Zhi left, Han Mo sighed, “This girl has a bit of the style of our station’s senior, Xia Yi. So young, but not simple at all.”
It was well known that Han Mo was a famous “iron lady” at the station—she never praised anyone lightly. Yet now, she had complimented an unknown young woman.
Shu Meng, who had worked at the station for three years and had never received any praise from Han Mo, pursed her lips and snorted coldly, “Maybe it’s just a fluke. Han, you should wait to see how she performs in the second round before making up your mind!”
…
Hospital.
“Yay, yay, yay! I knew my beautiful Zhi would ace the interview!” Xiao Kai threw her arms around Nan Zhi’s graceful neck and planted a kiss on her cheek. “A little encouragement from love!”
Nan Zhi pulled Xiao Kai into her embrace, laughter sparkling in her bright eyes. “Mommy’s only passed the first round—the second interview is still a week away.”
“Anyway, Kai’s woman is sure to conquer every challenge!”
