Looking at Yan Hua’s reddened eyes, Bo Yan spoke in a detached tone, “I’m sorry.”

Yan Hua’s hands, clenched at her sides, slowly tightened. The air in her chest seemed to be squeezed out bit by bit; she found it hard to breathe, her heart aching beyond endurance. Yet, she did not blame him.

Feelings could never be forced, after all.

He had given her hope and sunshine. Though the time was brief, it was enough for her.

Yan Hua raised her chin slightly, struggling to hold back the tears swirling in her eyes. She refused to cry in front of him. “You don’t need to apologize. We’re not suited for each other—actually, I’ve known that for a long time. I don’t blame you, truly. You deserve someone better.”

Watching her put on a smile while her heart was clearly torn to pieces, Bo Yan felt as though something had stung his chest, sending a dull ache through him.

His refined and indifferent face still betrayed no emotion. After a long silence, he nodded. “Alright, let’s break up.”

He was always this cold and cruel, making even the act of breaking up fall upon her to initiate.

He had thought that would spare her a fraction of the pain. However, falling in love with someone who shouldn’t be loved was, in itself, an addiction whose pain could never be cured.

Yan Hua slammed the door shut.

Pressing her back against the door frame, she slowly slid down. Burying her face in her hands as tears streamed down, she wept silently and bitterly.

Vaguely, she still remembered when he first came to the Yan family as a bodyguard. Dressed entirely in black, standing among a group of bodyguards, he had been the coldest and most striking of them all.

She had leaned against her bedroom window, her face flushed as she sized him up.

Watching him stand out among more than twenty applicants for the bodyguard position.

After knocking a group of men to the ground, he had shaken the sweat from his brow, raised his head, and glanced up at the window.

She saw him take the rimless glasses from his pocket and set them upon the bridge of his nose. Through the lenses, she and he gazed at each other across the distance.

That single glance had become a lifetime for her.

……

Nan Zhi had also been carried into the car by Mu Sihan.

Perhaps infected by Yan Hua’s sorrow, she felt utterly dejected.

Not long after the car pulled away, a sudden churning rose in her stomach. “I can’t take it anymore, I feel awful.”

Mu Sihan’s dark eyes locked onto her flushed face, and he gave her forehead a fierce poke. “Who told you to drink so much? Other people are going through a breakup, are you going through one too?”

Dazed, Nan Zhi looked at the handsome, gloomy man and pouted. “I want to throw up.”

Before Mu Sihan could even tell the driver to pull over, a retching sound suddenly echoed inside the carriage.

The air fell into a dead silence. The driver in the front felt an aura akin to the arrival of the Grim Reaper.

Realizing she had soiled someone’s expensive car, a chill crept up Nan Zhi’s spine. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”

If she had meant to, he would strangle her to death right now!

“Stop the car,” Mu Sihan ordered coldly.

The car pulled over to the roadside. Mu Sihan stepped out first, then walked over to Nan Zhi’s side and dragged her out of the car.

Nan Zhi squatted on the ground, hanging her head, expecting Mu Sihan to beat her.

After waiting for a long time without any pain descending, she slowly opened her eyes. A bottle of mineral water was extended toward her. “Rinse your mouth. It stinks to high heaven.”

He had already thoughtfully unscrewed the cap. After rinsing her mouth, Nan Zhi shot a red-eyed glance at the expressionless man. “Why don’t you go back first? I can just hail a cab.”

Mu Sihan had already dismissed the chauffeur; he couldn’t bear even the slightest lingering odor in the carriage. Glancing at the woman who was slumped like a pile of mud, he narrowed his dark eyes. “Looking like this, are you hoping to be raped and murdered?”

Nan Zhi was speechless.

He walked up to her, looking down at her with an arrogant expression. “Get on. For the sake of the little brat, I’ll carry you on my back.”
