Chapter 30: A Chance Encounter at the Hospital
Fu Shaoxiu heard what Nanyao said and pulled her back into his arms. His jaw rested on the top of her head, but his deep brown eyes couldn't help but glance at the slender woman walking out of the hospital lobby.
Her shoulders drooped slightly, as if she were weeping.
Fu Shaoxiu bit down hard, a trace of pain rising in his heart. The girl he once cherished, why had her private life become so wanton and indulgent?
The woman meant to bear his child should have been her.
Thinking back to four years ago, Fu Shaoxiu still felt a lingering resentment.
But without love, how could there be hatred?
Especially seeing her all alone, a sudden urge to chase after her welled up within him.
Fu Shaoxiu forcibly tore his gaze from that delicate silhouette, his hands tightening around Nanyao’s shoulders.
Nanyao winced from his grip, gasping softly. She lifted her head from his embrace, “Shaoxiu, let’s go for the examination.”
Fu Shaoxiu glanced down at Nanyao’s abdomen, guilt surging within.
Nanyao was the one who truly cared for him, a loyal woman.
He could not betray her.
Nan Zhi ran out of the hospital lobby, glancing back at the affectionate pair as they departed.
Though Nanyao was gentle and considerate, she was narrow-minded and prone to suspicion. If Fu Shaoxiu ever wavered, their days together would surely be troubled.
As for Nan Weiye, Ding Shuman, Nanyao, and even Fu Shaoxiu, Nan Zhi had long since lost all fondness for them.
After she went abroad, when her mother was critically ill, she once sought to borrow money from Nan Weiye. He had agreed at first, but when she called again, his phone was switched off.
He spent her grandfather’s and mother’s money, yet turned his back on them in their hour of need. Nan Zhi would never forgive him.
…
Xiao Kai went out for a walk in the sun, only to stumble upon the scene of Nan Zhi being “bullied” by Nanyao.
He too thought Nan Zhi was crying, his little sword-like brows furrowing deeply.
He was still so young, only three years old, and ill besides—unable to always stay by Mei Zhezhe’s side to protect her.
If only he could find Mei Zhezhe a powerful protector before he got better.
He had to find someone even taller and more handsome than the man who bullied Mommy!
Aunt Zhou took Xiao Kai for a stroll around the garden. The little fellow seemed weighed down with worry, prompting her to ask, “Young Master Kai, are you missing your mommy?”
Compared to children his age, Xiao Kai was not only much taller, but precocious as well.
Whenever he was deep in thought or unhappy, his exquisite, delicate face would take on a serious, aloof expression—even Aunt Zhou sometimes felt a little intimidated.
He was born with that aura.
Xiao Kai shook his head, frowning as he asked Aunt Zhou, “Granny Zhou, do you know who’s the tallest and most handsome man in Ning City?”
Aunt Zhou was momentarily speechless.
Xiao Kai tilted his head in thought, then pursed his lips in a self-assured little pout. “It’s really hard to find someone more handsome than Brother Kai!”
Aunt Zhou smiled. “Young Master Kai, why do you want to find the tallest and most handsome man?”
Of course, Xiao Kai wouldn’t tell Aunt Zhou that he wanted to find Mei Zhezhe a protector.
The thought of another man by Mei Zhezhe’s side made his heart ache.
But right now, unable to protect Mei Zhezhe himself, he had to grit his teeth and make a sacrifice.
His dark eyes darted around, and suddenly he spotted a cool-looking uncle standing under an ancient tree, talking to a doctor in a white coat.
Yes, it was the cool uncle he’d seen at the hotel entrance that day!
Today, the uncle wore a V-neck black silk shirt that revealed a hint of collarbone and chest, paired with matching slacks—a whole ensemble in black, coolness personified.
