Chapter 74: Direct Confrontation
“Don’t think that just because you’re pretty, you can lure away Miss Nanyao’s fiancé. I’ve seen plenty of women like you—vain, greedy, using your looks to climb the social ladder. All that glitters is not gold!”
“Couldn’t hook up with Young Master Fu, so now you’re trying your luck with those two men who just went into the private room with you, huh? Tsk tsk, they let you treat them to dinner and wouldn’t even pay for you. Shows how pathetic you are!”
“To be honest, I’ve been working here for over half a year, and I’ve never seen a woman pay for a meal before!”
The cashier’s voice grew louder and louder, drawing the attention of many passersby.
Nan Zhi felt a sharp pain at her temples. She knew there were plenty of unpleasant people in the world, but today seemed especially full of them.
“Miss Nanyao is the heiress of the Nan family. She’ll be a TV anchor someday. You can’t compare to her in any way!”
“You try to use your body to get ahead and still can’t afford to pay—what a disgrace to women everywhere.”
Nan Zhi frowned, her voice icy and calm. “Have you finished? With your imagination, you should be a screenwriter. Or are you just jealous because you wish you could catch Fu Shaoxiu’s eye? What do you think Nanyao would do if she knew a mere cashier was coveting her man?”
The cashier’s eyes widened in disbelief, her face turning pale as she glared at Nan Zhi. “W-what nonsense are you talking about?”
How did this woman see what even Miss Nanyao herself hadn’t noticed?
Nan Zhi understood Nanyao well. Before her mother married Nan Wei Ye, she and her daughter lived modestly. Once she married up, she considered herself a phoenix and looked down on anyone beneath her. There was no way she would be close with a cashier. So there was only one explanation: the cashier liked Fu Shaoxiu.
The passing waiters who overheard the conversation exchanged curious glances with the cashier.
The cashier, embarrassed and angry at being seen through, and remembering that Nan Zhi couldn’t even pay for her meal, lashed out even more viciously. “Don’t think I’m afraid of you just because you’re glib. If you’re so capable, then pay the bill! Didn’t you say you’re so pretty? Have one of those men you were dining with come pay for you!”
“This bottle of wine is non-refundable. If you’re so good, go into the private room, take off your clothes, and sleep with those two men. Maybe you’ll get your money that way—”
Unable to bear it any longer, Nan Zhi grabbed a cup of tea from a passing waiter and, without a flicker of emotion, splashed it in the cashier’s face. “You have such a filthy mouth. Looks like you need it washed out.”
The cashier glared at her, her face livid, and ground out, “Just you wait.” She picked up the phone and dialed.
Moments later, three burly security guards arrived.
“She’s trying to dine and dash, can’t pay, and just threw water all over me. Do something about it.”
One of the guards, apparently fond of the cashier, immediately shoved Nan Zhi roughly.
Nan Zhi staggered back a few steps and nearly fell, only to collide into a broad, warm chest. Large hands gripped her slender shoulders firmly.
A wave of heat brushed her ear as a man bent down, his cool lips close to her ear, his voice low and dark with a trace of wickedness. “Are you alright?”
Before Nan Zhi could reply, the man straightened and, with a single kick, sent the security guard who had pushed her flying.
The other two guards lunged, but before they could act, more than a dozen well-trained bodyguards in black stormed in from outside and surrounded them.
Nan Zhi heard nothing but the thuds of fists and feet, mixed with cries of pain and pleas for mercy.
