Chapter 50: In the End, He Was Destined Only to Be a Stranger to Her
Gu Xiaoqi’s eyes flickered slightly. “Ah? She’s always been good to you, hasn’t she? Did she hear about what happened today? What if she tries to persuade you again?”
Li Chuan and Jiang Ling said nothing, both watching her through the rearview mirror.
Mu Yinyin’s expression remained calm. She pulled her lips into a faint smile. “No matter what Grandma says, I won’t go back. But she’s always treated me kindly and deserves my respect. Excuse me, I need to take a call.”
“Alright.”
The car fell into sudden silence.
Mu Yinyin answered the phone.
“Grandma.”
“Ah, Yinyin, what are you doing?” Jiang Rou’s voice was as gentle as ever.
Mu Yinyin’s lips curved with a hint of a smile. “I’m in the car, heading home.”
She hadn’t seen Grandma at the banquet; she must not have attended. She did spot Old Master Fu and Fu Siyue, though she paid them little attention.
“I see… sigh…” Jiang Rou couldn’t help but let out a sigh.
Mu Yinyin’s eyes shifted; she knew Grandma was still troubled by her divorce from Fu Siyue. But Grandma never interfered, and Mu Yinyin wouldn’t bring it up. She hoped Grandma wouldn’t mention it either.
But this time, Mu Yinyin was mistaken.
Liang Min sighed again before speaking softly. “Yinyin, it was always my fault before.”
“Huh?” Mu Yinyin was a little confused. “Grandma, what are you saying?”
Jiang Rou sighed helplessly. “I shouldn’t have tried to control you all this time, shouldn’t have kept persuading you to stay with Fu Siyue.”
Mu Yinyin was surprised; she hadn’t expected Grandma, who always encouraged reconciliation, to regret her past actions today.
She pressed her lips together and spoke slowly, “Grandma, it’s not your fault. Elders just want their children to be happy—it’s only natural.”
Jiang Rou shook her head. “No, it’s my foolishness. I knew there was a vixen trying to seduce my grandson, knew my grandson was stubborn, but I kept pushing you two together, always scheming to have you meet at the same occasions. I was too selfish.”
“Don’t blame yourself, Grandma. Please don’t.” She didn’t know what else to say.
Mostly, Jiang Rou’s words today left her bewildered, unsure how to respond.
She… wasn’t certain if Grandma was using another tactic.
After all, Grandma had gone to great lengths before, inviting Fu Siyue home for meals, employing every method she could, and Mu Yinyin had witnessed it all.
So…
Now…
She suddenly didn’t dare think too much.
Liang Min sighed again—the most Mu Yinyin had ever heard her sigh in one day. Then her voice sounded once more. “I heard all about today’s banquet. Your grandfather’s face was grim, but I could see he regretted it. Yet what use is regret now?”
Mu Yinyin’s eyes flickered. Regret? How could they regret?
When had the Fu Group ever needed someone like her from Polaris Group?
To them, she was hardly worth mentioning.
“I couldn’t help but scold them repeatedly, but what’s done is done. Grandma knows you haven’t been happy in the Fu family. From now on, I won’t persuade you anymore. But… Yinyin, do you still see me as your real grandmother?”
Her voice grew choked near the end.
Mu Yinyin’s expression changed. She quickly replied, “You have always been my real grandmother, no matter what happens between Fu Siyue and me. You are my grandmother.”
All these years, whatever Grandma did to trick Fu Siyue had nothing to do with her. Grandma’s actions were always for her sake. How could she ever forget?
Grandma had always cared for her, never once showing displeasure at her humble origins. On the contrary, she always favored her. Sometimes, with Grandma, she felt more like the granddaughter, and Fu Siyue like the grandson-in-law.
“Really?” The old lady’s voice was clearly moved. “Yinyin, you’re not lying to me?”
Gu Xiaoqi heard everything, her gaze shifting, but she said nothing.
“Of course not.” Mu Yinyin held her phone, letting out a gentle sigh. “All these years, only you and my father loved me. After he passed, I only felt familial warmth from you. You’re my real grandmother. Even if I divorce Fu Siyue, it won’t change our bond.”
“Good, good, good.” The old lady’s voice was full of excitement, clearly delighted by Mu Yinyin’s reply.
“Grandma, it’s getting late. You should rest now.” Mu Yinyin’s voice was especially gentle, a softness she had never shown anyone else—not even Fu Siyue.
Once, she had wanted to be this gentle with him, but he never gave her the chance. Their conversations were scarce; she cooked countless meals, yet he never tasted a single one.
Fu Siyue.
In the end, he was only suited to be a stranger to her.
Without their lives intersecting, she could finally live as she pleased.
“Sigh… sleep, sleep. So, Yinyin, when will you have time to visit Grandma?”
Mu Yinyin hesitated. She had only just divorced Fu Siyue; visiting now might seem…
After thinking for a moment, she spoke softly, “Grandma, you could go out too. Why don’t we arrange to meet somewhere?”
“That works.” The old lady understood Mu Yinyin’s concerns, not minding at all. She was strong and healthy, no need to stay home every day.
She still enjoyed her daily walks.
“How about the day after tomorrow? The company is closed then; I’ll accompany you wherever you like.”
“Wonderful! It’s settled then, Yinyin.”
“Alright.” Mu Yinyin smiled gently. “Good night, Grandma.”
“Good night.”
After those words, Mu Yinyin put down her phone, and Liang Min quickly hung up as well.
Gu Xiaoqi looked at Mu Yinyin, her expression complicated. “Is Old Madam Fu still hoping for you two to reconcile?”
Mu Yinyin’s eyes flickered, shaking her head. “Honestly, I don’t know.”
She really didn’t know what else to say.
Gu Xiaoqi frowned. “So… when you meet her the day after tomorrow, she won’t bring Fu Siyue, will she?”
Mu Yinyin replied calmly, “I think if she truly wanted me and Fu Siyue to remarry, she would have brought him the first time. She knows I’ve made up my mind and won’t turn back.”
Gu Xiaoqi sighed, “Then we’ll just have to see what she does next.”
Mu Yinyin pressed her lips together, saying nothing.
Li Chuan spoke calmly, “Let’s not talk about this anymore. Since you’ve decided, there’s no point in dwelling on it, Xiaoqi.”
Suddenly, he turned his attention to Gu Xiaoqi, obviously about to say something important.
