Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Extraordinary Miss
In a certain cave within Mount Moon in Kanto, Snow and Dream walked silently. The sound of high heels striking the ground echoed through the quiet and spacious cavern. A Mismagius floated ahead of them, using its flash ability to illuminate their path.
This was the base of the Servants of the Divine in the Kanto region.
Thunder and Lightning used to come here as well, but once their experimental tasks were completed, they returned to the headquarters in Sinnoh. Now, only Snow and Dream remained in Kanto as members of the Servants of the Divine.
There was nothing to be done; Kanto was strictly monitored and offered little value. After all, there were no legends of Arceus in Kanto, marking it as a region abandoned by the glory of Arceus.
That was the official stance within the organization—more precisely, as Mr. Arceus himself claimed. And since he said so, everyone accepted it without question.
Of course, by now Snow and Dream understood that this so-called Mr. Arceus was merely spinning tales.
Abandoned by Arceus’s glory? Arceus himself had appeared—how could such a place be abandoned?
The more Snow and Dream thought about it on their journey, the more they realized their decision as sisters had been truly wise.
The Servants of the Divine were becoming less promising with every passing day. They looked down on groups like Team Rocket and other villainous organizations, and even more so on criminal syndicates like the Poacher’s League.
Truth be told, the Poacher’s League was beneath notice, but was Team Rocket really something anyone could scorn?
Even so, Snow and Dream felt no attachment to the Servants of the Divine, though Chen Ou was convinced the organization was more complex than it appeared. Thus, he arranged for Snow and Dream to serve as undercover agents. Their role now was to ascend within the organization and uncover its true nature.
Serve Arceus? Only fools would believe such nonsense...
Never had they seen an ambitious person who was a genuinely devout follower; the ambitious only believed in themselves.
The cave was deep; Snow and Dream walked for a long time before reaching its end.
At the end of the cave stood a computer for video calls.
How simple and unadorned.
They turned on the computer and sent a request to their sole contact. While waiting for the call to connect, Snow and Dream exchanged glances, confirming they would act according to their plan.
Soon, the connection was made.
A person wearing a Mew mask appeared on the screen.
Snow and Dream bowed slightly and said, "Miss Psychic."
Psychic nodded and asked, "Have you obtained the Tablet?"
Snow replied, "I’m sorry, Miss Psychic. When I found the Poison Tablet, a trainer named Chen Ou appeared as well. I was defeated by him, and though the Poison Tablet appeared soon after, he couldn’t stop it either. The Poison Tablet escaped."
Apart from the crackling of electrical currents, the cave fell into an unsettling silence once more.
Snow and Dream kept their heads lowered, not daring to look up at Psychic’s reaction.
After a long pause, Miss Psychic spoke. "Chen Ou, you say? I recall Thunder and Lightning’s plan also failed because of him. It seems his danger level needs to be reassessed. Raise your heads. Though this was your fault, it was mine as well. I shouldn’t have overlooked such a possibility."
"Thank you, Miss Psychic," the sisters replied in unison, then straightened up.
"No need for thanks. Since you have witnessed the Poison Tablet, write a report and submit it. Find an opportunity in the next couple of days to return to headquarters in Sinnoh. I’ll assign other emissaries to take charge of Kanto."
Her tone was gentle. In fact, it was always gentle. Dream had witnessed it—even when she killed, she remained gentle.
With that, Miss Psychic ended the call. The cave returned to silence.
The sisters looked at each other but said nothing. After a while, a Mismagius flew back from the shadows and nodded to Dream, signaling that there was no danger or anything else around. Only then did the sisters speak.
"Sis, that Miss Psychic really knows how to talk! She even admitted blame… If she hadn’t insisted you go alone, making me stay at the base in case of unexpected events, we might have succeeded," Dream said, removing her mask and rolling her eyes dramatically.
"Don’t be ridiculous," Snow replied, taking off her mask to reveal a face that blended enchantment and elegance. "Do you really think that with your help, you could defeat Chen Ou’s Entei? Or do you suppose the two of us could take on Arceus together?"
Dream stuck out her tongue at Snow. "I was just saying. But I feel like Psychic is making us take the blame."
Snow didn’t argue, but nodded seriously. She felt the same way. Relationships between members of the Servants of the Divine were rather cold.
Though they could feign any relationship for the sake of a mission in public, true sisterhood like Snow and Dream’s was rare—almost unheard of.
Thus, shifting blame and setting up teammates was commonplace.
This was precisely why Snow and Dream believed the organization would never accomplish anything great.
For Chen Ou, their sole remaining value was as undercover agents. Since he intended to dig deep into the organization, it was their duty to do the same.
It was simply Chen Ou’s mission...
"But, sis, is it really okay to write the report as we discussed? A Muk absorbed the Poison Tablet’s energy, then severely injured Professor Chen Ou, before losing its own combat ability. Finally, the Poison Tablet escaped while Professor Chen Ou was too weak to fight." Dream’s expression was rather complex. "Isn’t that a bit far-fetched? I wouldn’t dare write it like that."
Snow shook her head. "That’s exactly how the Flying pervert described it. And the reports sent from Psychic regarding Flying, Ghost, Steel, Water, and Ground followed the same formula. There’s no issue with such fabrications. Psychic has no reason to deceive us about this. Unless, of course, none of those people told the truth."
Dream thought it over and then said seriously, "I really feel like it’s possible none of them actually told the truth."
Snow was momentarily taken aback.
Indeed, thinking about it carefully, it was entirely possible!
Flying was unreliable, Ground seemed simple but was a sly fox, Ghost and Psychic were at odds, Water was a smiling tiger, Steel and Flying were thick as thieves...
Snow rubbed her forehead in exasperation.
Chen Ou was truly a kind soul! With such an organization, could it really pose any threat?
Seeing her sister’s expression, Dream understood as well. The two sisters sighed together.
What a mess...
P.S. Many thanks to Mobai Muchen for the generous reward of 100 starting points! Wishing the benefactor plenty of luck in love!
