Chapter 34: The Mecha Squad Versus the Komodo Tyrannosaurus
“Roar~!”
With a colossal roar, a beast towering over a hundred meters and bearing three sword-like spikes on its back burst forth from the ruins of a collapsed building. Shattered chunks of concrete flew in all directions like cannonballs. A Tyrannosaurus-class beast general, unable to dodge in time, was crushed beneath a boulder and reduced to pulp.
Under Jarvis’s command, the mech squad had no intention to enter the cramped interior and engage in close combat with the Komodo Tyrant. Instead, they targeted the key structural points from outside, causing the entire station to collapse. A relatively open environment was far more suited to the mech squad, allowing them to maximize their advantages.
With its lair destroyed, the Komodo Tyrant was enraged beyond measure, desperate to devour the ‘little insects’ that had disturbed its slumber. These ‘large iron chunks’ were hardly palatable, but with the terrifying constitution of a lord-class beast, it could still digest them.
Suddenly accelerating, the Komodo Tyrant struck the ground with such force that a deep pit formed beneath its feet, spiderweb cracks radiating outward. In an instant, its speed soared to the extreme, leaving a chain of sonic booms in its wake.
The mech squad reacted even faster, immediately spreading out in a fan formation. Three ‘Guardians’ activated their plasma shields and moved to the front, directly blocking the Komodo Tyrant’s charge head-on.
Boom!
The Komodo Tyrant collided with a Guardian, unleashing a deafening crash as both sides were forced backward. If one observed carefully, they’d notice that at the moment of impact, the beast and the mech hadn’t actually touched—an ‘air wall’ separated them.
This was the function of the plasma shield: it generated an invisible barrier of plasma around the mech’s surface, defending against enemy attacks. Until the shield was broken, the mech’s body remained unharmed. As for the shield’s defensive capacity, even a planetary-class adversary would struggle to breach it.
Defending against a lord-class beast posed no challenge at all before the energy was depleted.
The violent collision left the Komodo Tyrant dazed, its head swaying as it tried to shake off the dizziness. At that moment, two ‘Firebats’ simultaneously unleashed their flame throwers, spraying twin streams of pure white, high-temperature fire from either side toward the beast.
Further back, several ‘Gunners’ switched to rapid-fire mode, relentlessly targeting the Komodo Tyrant’s head. The ‘Ripper’ weapon posed a significant threat to higher lord-class monsters, but with the beast’s formidable defenses, it could still withstand the barrage for a while, suffering only superficial wounds.
However, the searing flames of the Firebats were enough to burn through the scales of even king-class monsters. Under the intense heat, the Komodo Tyrant’s scales quickly melted, leaving a gaping hole.
The agony snapped the beast back to its senses. It tried to retreat, seeking escape from the mech squad’s assault. Yet, in that brief moment, the three Guardians surged forward, sealing off every avenue of retreat.
They had no intention of engaging in direct melee, but should the Komodo Tyrant attempt to flee, it would have to break through the Guardians’ blockade first. The Guardians didn’t need to defeat the beast—only to entangle it long enough to keep it within the Firebats’ attack range.
Thanks to the plasma shield’s robust defense, the Firebats and Gunners could attack without fear of friendly fire, fighting with greater composure.
Sensing the danger, the Komodo Tyrant threw itself against the Guardians’ line with desperate force. At all costs, it managed to exhaust one Guardian’s energy, forcing its shield offline and sending it flying. Yet another Guardian promptly took its place, driving the beast back into the squad’s kill zone.
Meanwhile, the ‘Mechanic’ quickly retrieved spare batteries and parts from the transport vehicle, conducting emergency repairs on the Guardian. In less than half a minute, it was battle-ready and returned to the fray.
During this time, under the relentless assault from six Gunners and two Firebats, the Komodo Tyrant’s wounds worsened, its strength rapidly waning—gone was its initial might.
Moments later, riddled with bullet holes and burn marks, the Komodo Tyrant could no longer endure. Drained of its last breath, it collapsed heavily to the ground.
For security reasons, Jiang Chen had not assigned a ‘Sniper’ to this squad, opting instead for an additional Gunner. Overall firepower was somewhat reduced, yet even so, they managed to hunt down a high lord-class Komodo Tyrant within mere minutes.
When the beast fell, silence enveloped the military conference room in Jiangnan Base City. After a long pause, Jia Yi finally spoke: “This multi-role mech squad is indeed far more effective than a single Gunner. To bring down a high-level lord so effortlessly…”
“Unfortunately, the Firebats require a vast amount of high-energy fuel, posing a greater strain on logistics. With a few more Firebats, the efficiency of hunting high-tier monsters would be even higher,” Li Dawei remarked.
Drawing on Jiang Chen’s provided data and this battle, Li Dawei understood the strategy. In this configuration, Gunners primarily cleared the field and eliminated lower-tier monsters, while also harrying higher-tier beasts.
Guardians were responsible for entangling powerful monsters, preventing their escape.
The main firepower came from the formidable attack of the Firebats.
The fire stream, compressed to its utmost, inflicted damage on high-tier monsters that surpassed even the average War God-class fighter. The only drawback was the rapid consumption of high-energy fuel, which was troublesome to replenish and couldn’t be carried in large quantities.
Thus, before encountering a lord-class beast, the Firebats never engaged; all field-clearing was handled by the Gunners.
Only when faced with a lord-class monster did the Firebats strike, relying on teammates to create opportunities and swiftly finish the kill.
The tactic was simple, but as long as it was executed as planned, its effectiveness was extraordinary.
“Let’s keep watching. The scheduled mission isn’t finished yet—let’s see how this mech squad performs next,” Jia Yi ordered. “Remember to save the live broadcast footage and hand it over to the staff department for analysis. We need to discuss whether there might be any issues when pilots operate directly. For now, let’s finish watching this operation.”
