Chapter One: Reborn as an Overweight Girl in the 1980s
"Su Wan, I want to break off our engagement." A man's voice sounded above her, snapping Su Wan out of her stunned daze.
She looked up and saw a handsome man in a white shirt towering over her.
What a mess of a life—she had actually transmigrated.
A few days ago, in a fit of pique with her parents, she had recklessly flown the helicopter parked in the yard despite the thunderstorm. She’d only wanted to scare them a little, but a bolt of lightning struck, the helicopter exploded on the spot, and Su Wan was blown to pieces along with it.
When she woke up, she found herself inside a romance novel set in a bygone era, one she had read before.
Because she’d squandered her previous life and acted with reckless abandon, the system had punished her by casting her as the cannon-fodder supporting character.
The original Su Wan was a two-hundred-pound woman. After the male lead, Wang Luo, broke off their engagement, she tried to end her own life by smashing her head against a wall, damaging her brain and becoming mentally impaired. Her younger brother cared for her until she drowned at age thirty.
The last time she was mentioned in the novel was on the day of the male and female leads’ grand wedding, when news of her death reached Wang Luo. For a brief moment, he remembered the woman who had loved him so desperately and even tried to kill herself for him. He was full of emotion, but that was all—three minutes later, the radiant bride made her entrance, and the pitifully fat woman was instantly forgotten.
If Su Wan wanted to change the original character’s fate and survive, she had to accumulate virtue and complete the tasks assigned by the system.
As Su Wan wallowed in misery and despair, the man’s voice sounded again. "Su Wan, you’re a good person. But I don’t love you."
"I have found the love of my life now. I hope you, too, find your true soulmate."
Tch—look at that suffocating, melodramatic speech straight out of a romance drama.
The author had poured words upon words to convey the male lead’s guilt.
But that didn’t stop Su Wan from feeling thoroughly disgusted.
Damn it, even if you don’t love her, that never stopped you from leeching off her, did it?
The original Su Wan’s father had been a naval officer who died at sea during a mission. Her mother, devastated, soon passed away from illness, leaving only a grandfather in his sixties to care for Su Wan and her younger brother.
Her grandfather had also been in the military and was highly respected in the village.
The male lead had been born into a landlord’s family and had suffered much oppression, to the point where life became unbearable. It was only because the original Su Wan pleaded with her grandfather for help that his family’s situation improved.
Later, when new policies were enacted, her grandfather recommended him for a teaching position in the city, hoping to pave the way for Su Wan to marry into a better life.
But after just a few days as a teacher, the male lead’s heart grew restless and he changed his mind.
Su Wan spat, "Bah! You’re disgusting, you know that?"
"If you really feel so guilty, why don’t you return everything you took from my family?"
Wang Luo was still lost in his own guilt, but when he heard this, he froze.
He gazed at Su Wan with those eyes brimming with tenderness. "At a time like this, can’t you just stop making a fuss? I really don’t have feelings for you."
In his mind, Su Wan was playing hard to get, but it was useless—his heart had already been stolen by another.
Su Wan was speechless. Wasn’t he supposed to be the male lead? Why was he so petty?
She wanted to make things clear, but suddenly the system’s voice echoed in her mind: [Warning: Host is not allowed to act in ways contrary to the original character's personality. Otherwise, this will be considered a violation.]
"What happens if I break the rules?" Su Wan whispered.
[You will lose any opportunity to change your fate and immediately become mentally impaired, destined to drown at age thirty.]
Whoa!
Su Wan shut her mouth at once, not daring to say another word.
Meanwhile, Wang Luo thought Su Wan was giving up and smiled with relief.
He looked at her with sincere eyes and said gently, "Su Wan, I hope you find true love."
True love, my foot!
Su Wan was so disgusted she nearly vomited, but she forced herself to lower her head.
As she did, she noticed Wang Luo’s shoes had a giant hole, his precious toes poking right through.
What kind of bizarre setting was this?
The male lead’s toes were actually saying hello to her!
She quickly held her breath, as if she could already smell foot odor.
When Wang Luo noticed Su Wan’s gaze, he looked as though he’d been struck by lightning.
His face flushed with embarrassment as he tried to hide his toes behind him, shouting angrily, "What are you looking at?!"
Su Wan pressed her lips together innocently—she hadn’t even said anything, and yet the male lead was already losing his cool!
Seeing Wang Luo’s face turning red like a fighting rooster, Su Wan deliberately widened her eyes in shock, staring even harder at his shoes, until Wang Luo was so mortified he wished he could crawl into a hole.
[OOC warning.] The system’s cold voice rang out again.
Su Wan kept her eyes on Wang Luo’s foot but, with feigned concern, said, "Look at you—why are you getting angry for no reason? Careful, you might damage your health. I’d be heartbroken, you know."
Wang Luo was furious.
Was there any hint of genuine concern in her words?
And could she please stop staring at his feet?
[Second OOC warning!] The system’s cold voice rang out once more.
Su Wan protested in her mind, "Come on, I haven’t said anything!"
The system ignored her. [OOC is OOC. Host is advised not to challenge the system’s authority.]
Su Wan could only give in.
Unwillingly, she raised her head and let Wang Luo off the hook.
"I’m not the one to decide about breaking off the engagement. Go talk to my grandfather," she said.
As if she would let the male lead have his way so easily—then she wouldn’t be Su Wan.
Her grandfather, a veteran, carried an air of severity and unwavering righteousness from the battlefield. He was a man of his word.
Wang Luo was so intimidated by the old man that he’d chosen to meet the original Su Wan alone.
He took a step forward, about to reach for Su Wan, when she lowered her head and stared at his shoes again.
He reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, face flushing as he quickly pulled his foot back.
He glared at Su Wan, already rehearsing several retorts in his mind.
But Su Wan said nothing, just shot him a look of contempt and turned to leave.
Wang Luo opened his mouth, then let his hand fall helplessly and viciously kicked a stone by the roadside.
There was a loud crack—and his toe broke instantly.
His already battered shoe was now completely ruined.
Hearing the commotion, Su Wan turned to see Wang Luo hopping in pain, clutching his foot.
Excellent—she’d managed to make things difficult for the male lead without even breaking character.
But she had something urgent to confirm.
She hurried to a secluded spot and impatiently took off her shoes.
A foul stench immediately assaulted her senses.
Damn!
She knew it!
The moment she’d seen Wang Luo’s shoes, she’d felt a discomfort in her own feet—and she’d been right.
Forcing down a wave of nausea, she quickly put her shoes back on.
But that pungent smell refused to leave her nostrils.
Su Wan felt like crying.
What was wrong with the original character? It was bad enough to be so pathetic—did she have to be so unhygienic, too?
