Cui Juan’s eyes darted anxiously as she heard this, glancing hesitantly at the doctor. “Are you telling the truth?”

The doctor, seeing that his suggestion might work, hurriedly raised his hand in oath. “Please trust me. I give you my word.”

Just as Cui Juan wavered, about to let go, Father Wang—who had been feigning unconsciousness—suddenly coughed. Cui Juan shot her husband a look and instantly tightened her grip again. “Get lost! Don’t even think about it!”

At that critical moment, Chen Tianyu suddenly forced his way through the crowd. With a single punch, he sent Cui Juan sprawling, then swiftly grabbed the surgical consent form from the nurse and signed his name.

“Hurry! I’m the patient’s brother. Start the surgery at once.”

People in the corridor quickly moved aside, and at last, Chen Wanjun was wheeled into the operating room.

Standing before the operating room doors, Chen Tianyu’s hands wouldn’t stop trembling. He turned to Su Wan, who stood nearby. “Thank you so much for today.”

Su Wan waved her hand dismissively. “It’s nothing, really. Just glad your sister is safe.”

Chen Tianyu’s mind was a whirlwind of confusion. If he hadn’t come, if he’d let his anger keep him away, would his sister have died? He could hardly believe that people like Wang Luo’s parents existed in this world. How had his sister endured her days in their home?

Su Wan patted his arm. “Don’t worry. She’ll be alright.”

He looked at her. Her hair was slightly disheveled, her forehead slick with sweat from running, and she was still trying to catch her breath. Suddenly, his heart felt a pang of warmth. Only recently, his sister had stolen Su Wan’s fiancé, and he’d even teamed up with Chi Zhou to kidnap her, costing her a bicycle.

Yet here she was, putting aside all past grievances, doing everything possible to help.

“Really, thank you,” Chen Tianyu said sincerely once more.

“It was nothing. Look after your sister. My tricycle is still downstairs—I’ve got to run,” Su Wan replied.

She was in a hurry; in her rush to help, she’d forgotten to lock her tricycle. Who knew what state it was in now?

As she was about to leave the hospital, Chen Tianyu called out to her again. Su Wan turned to see him standing there, looking dazed. “I’m sorry for what happened before.”

But Su Wan couldn’t be bothered. She just waved a hand and walked off.

When she reached the parking area, her heart sank. Her newly bought tricycle, along with the bloodstained quilt on it, had been stolen!

“Damn! They even steal bloodied things from hospitals—aren’t they afraid someone died on them?”

She was on the verge of tears. Doing the right thing was so hard.

As she stood there, overwhelmed with grief, Chen Tianyu’s voice called out from a distance. “What’s wrong?”

She turned to see him on the second floor, peering down at her through a window.

She shot him a fierce glare. Just her luck—nothing good ever happened when he was around.

Now she’d lost another vehicle.

Fuming, Su Wan stomped her foot and turned away, ignoring him.

Upstairs, Chen Tianyu was left bewildered. What now? Why was she angry? What a strange girl. Though, he had to admit, she looked rather cute when she was mad.

His spirits lifted as he glanced back and noticed the operating room lights had gone out. He hurried over as the doctor emerged, pulling off his mask. “The surgery went smoothly. The patient is out of danger.”

Chen Tianyu finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Once Chen Wanjun was moved to a regular ward, he called their parents. Before long, Mr. and Mrs. Chen arrived, only to find that the Wangs had already vanished. Even when people were sent to search their home, they were nowhere to be found.

Mrs. Chen sat at her daughter’s bedside, weeping uncontrollably. She had only agreed to let Wanjun go with Wang Luo in a moment of anger, thinking a few hard days would bring her to her senses. She never imagined things would turn out this way.

This was the daughter she’d cherished with her life, and the Wangs had reduced her to this state.

Mrs. Chen’s heart was breaking.

Mr. Chen felt no better. As he looked at his daughter’s rough hands, all he could see was the image of her laboring, heavily pregnant. He reached out and plucked a piece of straw from her hair, his hands clenching involuntarily.

“Go. No matter what, find those two wretches!”

Chen Tianyu accepted the order and left.

Soon, teams were once again scouring Yun City, searching for the Wangs.

When Wang Luo’s parents were found, they were in the black market, trying to sell a newly stolen tricycle. Father Wang was haggling fiercely with a vehicle dealer, while Cui Juan stood nearby, clutching the bloodstained quilt.

Earlier, when Su Wan and Cui Juan had taken Chen Wanjun upstairs, Father Wang had been careful. Once they disappeared, he’d hidden the tricycle in a secluded spot. Since he’d ridden it there, any passerby would assume it was his.

He waited until Su Wan had left, unable to find her tricycle, then wheeled it out of the hospital as if nothing had happened, taking it to the black market to sell.

Just as he was smugly about to accept the money, a group of people closed in. In moments, both he and Cui Juan were subdued and taken away. As they were dragged off, Father Wang cried out in desperation, “My tricycle, my tricycle!”

The leader glanced at it and ordered his men to take the vehicle as well.

When the two were brought to the hospital, Chen Wanjun had already regained consciousness. Upon learning what had happened, she broke down in tears.

The Chen parents wept with her. Mrs. Chen stroked her daughter’s hair. “Sweet girl, we’ve never blamed you. As long as you listen to us from now on, we’ll never let you suffer again.”

Chen Wanjun nodded through her tears, but her thoughts were still with Wang Luo. If only he were here, her parents wouldn’t be like this.

Wang Luo’s parents knelt on the floor, sobbing bitterly. Father Wang leapt up and slapped Cui Juan, then fell to his knees before the Chens, banging his head on the floor. “This is all my damn wife’s doing—I knew nothing of it!”

Cui Juan kept kowtowing to Chen Wanjun. “Wanjun, please forgive me. I just couldn’t bear to lose my child—that’s why I did something so foolish. You’re a mother too—you understand, don’t you?”

At these words, Chen Wanjun’s hand went unconsciously to her now-flat belly. Her child—just days ago, she could still feel it moving. Now, nothing.

A wave of grief washed over her. She turned to her brother. “Brother, what about my baby?”

Just then, Chen Tianyu remembered the servant’s report—a tricycle had been confiscated, likely the one the girl used to bring Miss here.

He found the situation almost comical. No wonder Su Wan had called him her jinx. Every time he encountered her, she lost something.

First a bicycle, then her shoes, now the tricycle. It seemed fate had it in for her means of transport.

Leaning against the doorframe, he couldn’t help but laugh.

“Brother!” Chen Wanjun’s voice suddenly rose.

He snapped out of his reverie. “Ah? What is it?”
